Biteplate vs Teeth Pulling

Hi,

I've had upper braces for about a year which have successfully straightened my teeth and I'm happy with the results. However, I have an overbite which ortho says requires a bite plate.

After about 4 months of dallying around on my part, I know I'm not going through with the bite plate. For one thing, it makes me gag from the time I put it in until I have to take it back out. I also simply can not afford to talk with a lisp at work, it's just not an option. I am also already about 10 pounds underweight, pregnant, and having a difficult time eating as it is. For the baby's sake if nothing else, I don't believe I should be doing anything that impedes my ability to eat.

And to be quite frank, I went through this purely for cosmetic reasons. The crookedness of the top teeth bothered me horribly and I'm very happy that is over with. I'm frustrated and annoyed to continue the treatment with it being such a hassle.

So in short, my question is - is it REALLY a big deal to fix the overbite even though the top teeth almost fully cover the bottom teeth? And is it even an option to just remove those bottom teeth and replace them with fake ones that are aligned correctly? I know it's more costly in face value but not with the amount of time and frustration the bite plate is causing.

I will be speaking to my Ortho about it but I was hoping for another opinion. I appreciate any advice you have

An overbite is always less noticable of an issue than an underbite. If all feels well, i woudl leave it.

I had the palatal plate put in my mouth and it was hard to eat and a bit of a pain. However the results were quick and I had it out in about 4 months.

If your teeth are straight and good enough for you, leave it be. There are several celebrites and models with overbites/underbites and you would never know unless they showed u.

Thanks for the response. I feel alot better about just skipping this part of the procedure. The only person that knows I even have an overbite is the ortho lol I'll speak to the Ortho to see if there's anything I'm overlooking but I feel much better. Thanks

A couple of months ago i was required to get a biteplate too. I never could get used to lisping with it and hated it right off the bat. I went through the same thoughts as you did....should i wear it or not. In the end I ended up wearing it only at night and then during the day i tried to close my mouth in the position it was in with the biteplate.
Overall I believe having an overbite in the future could be a hassle if ours jaw happens to click now, but if it's an overbite thats not noticable and it doesnt bother you, then I would go with whatever you decide to do with it.
Good luck!
