braces bracket size

Are all braces brackets the same size, or are some different? I see talk of .018 and .022 sizes, is this concerning the wire or the bracket? And does the wire need to be taken off to put on a new bracket? (if there isn;t a bracket on the tooth in the first place)

the wires are generally the ones that come in different sizes. THere are brackets however that are made for certain teeth, but the wire is the one that does the work along with powerbands...
