Well, the retainers will happen for sometime, after that you are free
But comparing the metal installments to plastic retainers, the plastic is nothing at all.

Believe me, you want to wear your retainers. I stopped wearing mine and my front tooth has shifted crooked. Im now in the process of getting braces again... This time possibly Invisalign.

yupz, me too.
When you do have your retainers on, please do it as the dentist says, try not to be lazy like me, instead of 24 hours, i only wore it to sleep, thus now, it's a little off but still looks fine. Not perfect though, unless you don't mind

Its like going to the dentist. You have to make the effort to make regular appointments and not wait until something happens before doing it.
Anyway I love those cute designs that my doc gave to me when I had mine

Oh my gosh! I got my braces off yesterday and my doc said that he's going to give me retainers next week. He warned me that my tooth will go crooked it I don't use them.

I know that I was terrified to do anything except what the orthodontist said when he took the braces off finally! I was so afraid that my teeth would go back to what they were and after 2 years of braces I didn't want that!

You are kidding, I have to wear retainers even after the braces? I thought that they just came off and then I would be free of anything being in my mouth. I wonder when the orthodontist was going to mention this to me?

Well yeah, After the treatment is complete and the braces are gone, you are going to need retainers to hold your teeth in their new positions. You don't want them to go back the way it was, do ya? And usually you have to wear them for the same amount of time you had braces..So if you had 2 years of braces, another 2 years of retainers..

Please don't scare me
I had braces for 1 and half year and my dentist wants me to use retainers for 8 months, he never told me that I have to wear retainers before I went for the treatment.
As you mentioned that you had braces for 2 years and retainers for 2 years. I'm scared that he'll extend my usage of retainers for 8 more months.

I wore braces for 2 years and retainers for 3 years. As I never used to wear my retainers properly I developed gaps between my teeth. So My dentist extended the duration of retainers for 1 more year.

I was told that I will have to wear a metal retainer for some time after my braces. I really hope that all of the effort that I am putting into correcting my teeth will be worth it in the end. I sometimes that I feel that I am too old to worry about this.

Your teeth take a lot of time to set into place after braces. The pressure put on your teeth by braces to put them into proper placement can't just 'go away'. You have to wear a retainer to ensure that they don't move, but without adding more pressure, just holding them where they already are.

Yes, you have to wear a retainer once your brace is removed. For some, they wear it minimum of 6 months to one year to ensure that the alignment of your teeth will be retained.

Nothing worse than having braces for three years and then having them all go back to crooked right away after having them taken off because you didn't wear your retainer!

I'm really glad I wore my retainer when I got my braces off. I was thrilled to have my smile all beautiful, but I surely didn't want to ruin it by taking my retainer out and not wearing it.

Yep... that is the whole idea behind Invisalign. You bascially get a new retainer each month to allow your teeth to adjust and shift to the new shape.

That is true, but I am not talking about Invisalign. I am talking about the retainers you get after braces.

I really would prefer the clear (essix) type.
