    Ouch

I just put in my second tray last night before bed and they are tight. I woke up this morning with alot of pain. I took them off to drink and they hurt like hell, mainly two upper teeth and one bottom tooth. I know my teeth are moving and all, but is there anything I can do...Im going to take some tylenol, not sure if that will help, all I can say is ooouch!

Ibuprofren will work better for nerve irritation and swelling. Tylenol works better for head aches. So unless you have a head ache, take Ibuprofren. I was unaware of the differences in the two until I had a pinched nerve in my back once.

Sorry to read your second aligner has caused this discomfort. Maybe your teeth weren't quite ready for this one yet, but they'll catch up and hopefully the pain will pass quickly.

I agree with aj ... pick a pain med suitable for mouth ache ... not a headache one. Although if you need something quickly, I'm sure any pain relief will ease what you're feeling.

Next ... chew! I know that probably sounds werid, but it will really help. When you have discomfort around your teeth, chewing is the best thing for them. Invisalign makes this more of a challenge, but often patients find chewing a cool damp cloth works. There are bite wafers that you can buy, but as long as you find something to chew on regularly during periods of discomfort, you'll find it passes quickly. Why? Chewing stimulates increased blood flow in the gums, and this supports the remodelling of the PDL (periodontal ligament), which in turn facilitates the processes necessary for tooth movement!

Hope you're feeling loads better! Take care.

Thanks for the replies, Oh Sunny, I was in alot of pain this morning, i knew when I put them on last night it was going to be painful, but I took some melotonin and went to bed. This morning it hurt really bad, but now they dont hurt that bad, about the same as the first aligners did. I think the chewing does help, I didnt have any Tylenol, so I used some salt water, anything to help...it did help alittle, but I think eating helped alot because when I took the aligners off, my teeth hurt alot worst than what they did with them on. They are still alittle sore, but I wont lose any sleep over it, I just have no tolerance for pain. I am going to buy some Ibuprofen though just incase, thanks guys

Great you're feeling a little better Angel.

It's good you're going to have some pain meds available just in case. There's no need to suffer, but instead feeling good should be a priority.

    Great that chewing has helped!

    Take care!

I did the same thing Monday night, and they felt fine when I woke up, but taking them off is a real pain... It's the same teeth, these canines that stick out from the rest of my teeth... They've gotten better, but those two teeth (left top and bottom) hurt so bad when I take these off and put them on. The bottom is worse than the top..

Advil is my new best friend. I keep it stashed everywhere. In my purse, in my office, next to the bed.. I find the Liqui-gels to work the best, but I think that's because they work the fastest

Good luck, and hopefully by next week, you'll be able to forget they are on

    question about the chewing thing

I agree that the chewing thing does make my teeth feel better sooner than later when puttin a new tray in. However, I thought that it was possibly for a different reason.

When I put a new tray in, my aligners bulge in the back of my mouth, making it not possible to bring my teeth completely together without biting down with effort. I was not surprised by this because I just thought it was that way until my front teeth moved to match the aligner. I then attempted to try not chewing on the aligner, thinking that perhaps I was stretching the aligner, making it less effective. I have no idea if this is true or not. but its just a thought.

    Hi.

I received my first aligner last night. Did anyone else notice that the tongue and lips were being cut up? I didn't know if this was normal or because they need to smooth the aligner.

    NewLife,

I will start my 2nd set tonight. Ouch.

I wouldn't say my tongue is cut up but it has been sore. For me it is due to the fact that I can't stop running it along the rough edges of the aligner. I also noticed that it was better once my teeth sifted and the aligner fit more snuggly on my teeth, the edge wasn't up so high. I did use the wax the first few days and that helped. I also used a nail file on some of the edges as some of the others had recommended.

Hopefully you're feeling better already. Good luck,

    Jenlou

The first couple of days I had my first aligners, the bottom of my tongue hurt so bad. I was trying to read stories to my daughter for bed, and I could barely talk. It stopped hurting after a few days, and I haven't had any problems with that since then.

I know if you have "pokey" spots (that's what my ortho calls them), you can file them down, but being your first set, they should have checked that in the office.

    Good luck

NewLife and Jenlou, it's quite normal for irritation to be caused to other parts of the mouth, during the early stages of most types of orthodontic treatment. Warm salt water rinses will soothe and heal the mouth and are a great way to help these irritations to get better and not come back.

To make a salt water rinse, put a pinch of salt in a small amount of warm tap water (approx a 1/4 teaspoon of salt to 1/4 cup of water). This is usually enough to rinse with twice. Include a gargle, as salt water is also great for your throat.

    Good luck!

    5th Set of Trays

I'm on my 5th set of trays. Each one gets worse than the one before. I have such irritation on the inside of my upper lip that there is a big whelp all across. My dentist had invisalign (or supposedly) remake the trays. I do not kno if I can take another 6 to 7 months of this.

Sara please speak to your dentist about how each tray is affecting your mouth. This can be fixed and should be fixed.

You should be looking forward to the new trays, not dreading the irritation inside your lip.

Warm salt water rinses should soothe and help this area heal. Plus use wax generously on the part of the tray that is irritating.

    Good luck getting this sorted.

I am on day 1 of my 4th set of trays (of 15 on both top and bottom). They hurt more than the previous trays, more pressure. However, my mouth is used to the trays and I don't have the irratation that I did. The first week stunk. With that being said, I try to remind myself I would have all of the same issues with regular braces. The isn't cheap, or painless.. all the price for straight teeth. I can already tell a huge difference with my teeth. I smile more and actually show my teeth when I smile. I am really glad I went with Invisalign. I hope you all feel better!

Do you always get wax with you whem you get your first aligner? My ortho didn't say anything about pain or your tongue beeing cut up. If I will get invisilign ( I will know on the 7th of april) I think I have to ask for wax. Don't you see the wax when it is on your aligner?

Oki if a person is staring at your teeth, they will see you're wearing aligners and they will see if you have wax on. Comfort is more important than a nosey person!

Very few (if any) people notice I'm wearing braces (I have mostly stainless), as there lives are busy, and I just don't rate that much attention from them. I'm sure it will be the same with invisalign, as although we're really aware of our teeth and every change they make, to others ... well we're just not that important.

The aligners can take a little adjusting to, as unlike standard braces, the aligners are a fixed shape and therefore put more pressure on your teeth when they're changed, than when archwires are adjusted. Most people find that by putting new aligners in before going to bed, their teeth cope better. You also need to practise removing the aligners, as this can be uncomfortable to begin with, but with practise it gets easier.

Make sure you're well informed about your decision and choose and orthodontist you can communicate easily with. Good luck!
