    whitening gel with Invisalign

Is anyone using whitening gel with their invisalign? My ortho gave me 2 syringes full. I haven't used it yet b/c my mouth still seems very saliva filled (sorry for the image ) and I don't want to swallow a bunch of it. But if you used it, how much did you use at a time (or how long did a syringe last you) It says not to use longer than 2 weeks and I need to do it before 4 weeks is up since I'll get my attachments then. Just wondering (again!)

You'll be amazed at how little of the gel you need, because when you put the aligners on there's very little space for the gel. It squishes out. I usually did it all night, and my teeth were cold sensitive for a couple hours the next morning. But they were white.

In fact, I still have some of my second syringe left after two years. I only need to whiten once every few months, so it goes a long time.

I would recommend appropriate caution using these strong bleaching products - I don't think those with a high peroxide concentration are intended to be left on for hours at a time like this.

I wonder if its ok to do it once a day for an hour?

I think its weird that the directions say that you can use the gel overnight, or twice a day for 30 minutes each time, with at least an hour in between. I'd rather do it once a day for an hour and then just be done with it instead of having to keep taking then off and on.

The stuff I was given is a gel that you put into the braces. Kinda like the whitening trays you can buy. I'm almost done with it. I just changed my aligners on Monday night and the first couple of days are too tight to use the gel. It makes my teeth hurt too much. But I have to finish it off before I get my attachments in a couple of weeks.

My dentist gave me whitening gel because my attachments were stained (bad coffee habit, unable to give up entirely) but was very clear that I shouldn't leave it on for more than 2 hours max. I would recommend getting very specific advice before using a product like this.

do you know what percent peroxide it is?
Mine was 16% nitewhite, and now I bought 22% on amazon.com . after 3 days , my teeth get sensitive , if I leave it on overnight.

    But I love white teeth.
movie star cboy's need white teeth.

I was told not to whiten until treatment was completed as wherever you have buttons on your teeth, there will be spots when they remove them as under the buttons will be unwhitened teeth. Also, as your teeth move, the parts that were overlapped are going to be a different shade so whitening would enhance the color difference. I'm definately not doing it until after treatment.

cboy - it depends if you have hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, although at those concentrations, I think it must be carbamide. As far as I know though, it's not advised to use a 22% preparation for longer than about 45 minutes at a time - only 16% or lower are advised (at least by the manufacturer of the brand my dentist chooses) for overnight treatment.

Get hold of some Sensodyne, or a similar toothpaste for sensitive teeth and use that for a while, and the sensitivity should start to settle down.

Yes I think your right .. its carbamide.

my teeth are not too sensitive , I just feel like I need a chew toy after the 5th day or so ... like I want to chew on something.

I think I will just do 2 hours at a atime in the afternoon , then.

    Thanks for great advice!

Ooh I know that ache! Reminds me of slightly sore muscles after a good workout!

See if your ortho has any aligner chewies.

Hi there, I used nitewhite 10% under the instructions of my ortho and got some reasonable results. I have blogged it all hereMy Hollywood Smile: Bleaching with my Invisalign Aligners Although they did a fair job of whitening I did find that they gave me a few cracks on my gums and some sensitivity after a few nights, of both my teeth and gums.

My ortho recommends bleaching at the beginning when you have aligners but no attachments. Not sure why he prefers it this way.

Presumably to ensure there are not dark spots left where the attachements were when you bleached.

yse, sorry Zozo, I should have been clearer. My ortho doesn't want you to bleach with the attachments as you would get darker areas, but what I meant to say was I'm not sure why he wants you to bleach at the beginning of the process rather than the end, once the attachments are off.

For me, it was quite a good psychological boost. Those first couple of weeks are quite difficult when you are getting used to the aligners so I was happy to see something so visible happen early on.

ive also tried it with my aligners, however i put to much whitening solution in and when i put my aligners fully in most of the solution went into my mouth, yuck lol. think i will continue to use whitning throughout my treatment and then also have my teeth whitened at the end of my treatment by the dentist.

I saw a video online about this a while back. Sorry I can't post a link But anywhoo, I saw that the whitening trays you can buy at a store or something have little dips down in the front so the gel can settle there and stay on your teeth. With Invisalign, they're conformed to your teeth so that'd be why it pushes all the gel out into your mouth I'd guess. I used Crest Whitening strips a long time ago for my teeth, and I'll probly use them again after I get my Invisalign off. You guys can visit my profile and look at my pictures and see results if you'd like! I decided that if my teeth were going to be crooked, they'd at least be white!! hehe

What my dentist told me was that you need only the very thinnest smear of whitening gel to do the job. More than that and you are just wasting product, and risking it hurting your gums.

That might be why mine got sore actually zoso. I think a couple of times I overfilled the tray and it leaked out. My gums actually got tiny cracks, and were quite sensitive.

Hi I have a related question. I have 1 months course of whitening gel to use in my invisalign trays. I plan to use it once I have the attachments taken off so that it whitens the whole tooth and doesn't leave the bit behind the attachment dull. However, all of my invisalign trays have the gaps for the 4 attachments on my teeth. Will i still be able to ise the whitening gel with my invisalign trays if there are some gaps on the tray from where the attachments are meant to go or will that cause the teeth that should have the attachments on to not get as white as the tray isn't sitting right next to the tooth due to the attachment gap. Thanks guys for any help!

I'm supposed to be getting my attachments off temporarily for my wedding had talked to one of the assistant about having my teeth whitened in between. I'm just curious if anyone's had problems with discoloration when they've whitened prior to getting attachments? (ie. when they remove the attachments, is it possible for them to polish a bit too far? etc...)
