    Fillings and Invisalign

Will getting fillings done ruin the aligner's fit?

I had to have one re-filled, the ortho filled it rather than my dentist so that she could shape it to the aligner and it was fine!

Talk to your orthodontist - I suppose it could, depending on where the filling is.

I had to get two fillings early on in my treatment (bottom rear) and the aligners fit fine.

Fillings are fine during Invisalign treatment so long as they are made to be the same shape as the teeth when the aligners were made. Otherwise, they maybe become like an unwanted attachment and put undesired forces on the teeth.

That being said, it's quite difficult to do this. If there is a slight difference in the shape o the filling, there likely will not be any problems. However, the Invisalign provider should communicate this information to the dentist doing the filling.

The bigger question is why fillings need to be done during Invisalign. Generally orthodontic treatment, including impressions for aligners, is not started until after all cavities have been taken care of. With proper hygiene, cavities should never be an issue with Invisalign or braces.

    Good luck!

I've got my first normal dentist appointment on Tuesday since starting invisalign in January - now I've never had a filling in 31 years and had my last checkup in December just before I started invisalign and all was well then........so let's see what happens! Thinking I might need one filling as i've had a few cheeky soft drinks and bits of chocolate with trays in now and a again (I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't) - it'll be a sods law thing but after IPR I can do anything lol.

I'm taking before and after (so far) photos to my dentist (who said I didnt need braces I may add) to show him the progress so far as I'm so delighted with invisalign and my ortho's work so far. Started tray 21 yesterday 8 to go, cool!

Hi Everybody – I’m chuffed to bits today. I visited my normal dentist for my 6 monthly check up – the first since I started invisalign back in January. I’m delighted to say I don’t need any fillings......that’s no fillings in my life ever! How delighted am I????? My dentist has never seen invisalign before so I explained it all to him, obviously he saw the attachments during the check-up and just made sure he didn’t poke them too much with his pointy tool. I usually get a scale and a polish during my check-up, today I didn’t need the scale part, how cool is that, he said my teeth are soooooooo clean, so a little polish and I was free to leave, what a great start to today! Hope you’re all having good weeks too.

    Fantastic news Weeeyin!

For many adults having ortho treatment adds a great boost to their oral hygiene ... which is another plus!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

    well done weeyin!

I think my teeth are much cleaner too. Before Invisalign I was a "When I remember" flosser and to be honest I'm not sure I remembered more then 2-3 times a week. Now I can't believe I'll ever go back to flossing less than twice a day. My gums are so much healthier as a result.

Wow! No fillings your whole life? That is amazing. I have every single molar filled. When I was a child my parents never took me to the dentist because I was scared (?!) so when I went as a teenager there was already all kinds of damage.

This is why I love that my dentist is also my ortho. He's been very adamant about everything else being taken care of before we do braces.
