Not completely happy with the result...

Hey ppl, I have a few questions about my invisalign treatment. So I just had my permanent retainer put on behind the back of my top 6 teeth. I was not aware that I was going to get the permanent retainer on that day because there's still a bit of a gap left on the top front teeth. So, on that day, I thought I was going to get another new tray on the top for more adjustments. As it turns out, my ortho decided to put the permanent retainer on and filled the gap by teeth bonding. Which kind of upsets me a little because I was never told about getting it. I would've much preferred to have my teeth close in completely with trays instead. So after he attached the retainer behind my front teeth and did the bonding, there's STILL a tiny gap left, just barely enough to fit a thin piece of paper through.

Did anyone else here have a tiny bit of gap left that did not close with trays? Could I ask him to take the retainer off and give me more trays to close that tiny gap? Or is it too late? I just don't understand why he didn't order more trays after the last one when there clearly was still a little gap left.

Wise you should talk to your ortho about what you're feeling, so that this can be sorted for the best.

It's possible that refinements may not have been able to close this gap, but instead would have moved it, which may be worse for your bite. But ... even if that's the case, I think your ortho should discuss this with you, before doing the bonding.

    Hope your meeting goes well!

If you didn't want a space between your teeth, the treatment should not have ended with one. Please make sure, however, that you distinguish the difference between an embrasure space due to the contour of the teeth, and a space due to a lack of contact between adjacent teeth.

Depending on how and how much the teeth were moved, they could be more prone to redeveloping a space. For larger spaces, it is standard to place a fixed retainer. Please speak to your orthodontist to let him know how you feel.

I know my ortho doesnt feel overly confident one of my gaps is going to close with the Invisalign so I'm set up for a few weeks / month or so of tracks to get a perfect result, I'll not be letting any retainer be attached before I'm 100% happy and although I dont really want tracks after 7 months of invisalign its a lot of money to spend for a less than perfect result. I know my ortho is fab at track braces and results I was just stubborn and wanted invisalign for 90+% of the work esp after reading all the good results on here.

Just wanted to make a slightly plainer explanation here:

Sometimes we see a little triangular space between the teeth at the gumline, but further down the teeth (for uppers) the teeth come close together/touch - this little triangular gap (often referred to here as "black triangles") is the embrasure space. Depending on the shape of the teeth, and the health of the gums, this space can be entirely "filled" by interdental papillae - part of the gums. But if there is gum recession, or if the teeth are more "triangular" then there can be a gap that cannot be closed without reshaping the tooth. (And to do that, in some cases, might mess up the bite).

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the helpful feedback.

The embrasure space you guys are referring to isn't the problem that I have. There's clearly a thin line of space between my top teeth that did not close by the aligners.

Yes, I will tell him how I feel about the results, but my real question is how will he close that thin gap? I already have the permanent retainer hidden and stuck on the back of my teeth. Will he take the retainer off and plan for another aligner to adjust? Or will he just apply tooth bonding again to close that gap? I know these sort of questions are for my ortho, but him and I don't really talk at all, even so to the point where I had no idea I was going to get the permanent retainer till I went in on that day. Anyway, I digress, do you guys have any idea which option he would go with?

How your ortho approaches your request will definitely be up to his perferred way to practice. If he chooses to correct the gap using invisalign, you most likely will need new moulds done. Then your bonded retainer removed, then new aligners to refine your process. When the work is completed, a new bonded retainer should be put in place. If he considers the closing of this gap isn't possible with invisalign, then you need to talk to him to find out what your options are.

    Good luck with your appointment!

my dentist recommended bonding as well since I have a space between my two front bottom teeth. I am insisting on refinements as I can see the teeth can be moved together since I still have some crowding on the next two teeth on either side. make sense? I do not want bonding as i whiten my teeth and of course, the bonding doesnt whiten.
I am interested about the gums filling in the triangular teeth. The two teeth on the side of the front two have spaces up near the gum line, that was caused by having IPR's. Will these fill in?
