    Serious Problem with Invisalign

I just completed Invisalign recently. It lasted five months, but during that time, I noticed I could never bite down completely without the aligners in. I thought this was because my upper front teeth were just hitting the buttons (attachments) on my lower teeth.

WRONG. Now that the attachments have been taken off, I STILL cannot bite down. When my mouth is in a resting position (closed but without conscious effort in biting down), only my top and lower left front teeth touch, and my molars don't touch ever.

My bite was comfortable and natural before Invisalign and my teeth were straight and near perfection, but my parents forced me to fix some minor things. I'm literally in tears over this.

Is it normal not to be able to bite? Did they screw up my teeth?

For a side note, the lady orthodontist that worked on my teeth seemed incompetent and unfocused during all my visits. Also, I can chew fine without discomfort.

How long has it been since you've completed treatment? I would imagine that having your teeth slightly apart for so many months has "trained" your muscles to keep the bite open like that.

Did you actually check w/ your orthodontist about this problem? Or are you implying that she did not plan treatment correctly for you?

    Hi there,
I think the orthodontist on this forum commented on this recently that this can be common problem for inexperienced Invisalign orthodontists. I would talk to the orthodontist that did your teeth and ask her why it is and if she expects it to self correct. If not then I would seek a second opinion. My teeth are also doing this at the moment but I haven't finished treatment yet so I am hoping it will resolve later.

Your jaw hasn't adapted to the teeth being apart. One of the side effects of Invisalign treatment is that molars may stop meeting. There are several ways to corrrect this, including the use of some fixed buttons (not attachments), so speak to your orthodontist or dentist to discuss how you may correct this problem.

Kashi please talk to your orthodontist about this, as it's not the way your teeth should bite together. It's important that your bite is corrected, as it may have 'opened' while you had the aligners in place.

    Good luck!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

I had to have my canines filed down a bit once my teeth were done and the bite was great. They were chipped here and there due to hitting in the wrong position that they just needed to be shaped then i was fine.

I've been having Invisalign aligners for the past two & a half years, haven't been happy with teeth movement that it is going in the right direction. My orthodontist refused to see that they weren't perfect in his opinion, gone to another orthodontist for 2nd opinion and I have another one and a half years to correct what my 1st orthodontist has let happen. If your not happy with any stage, contact Invisalign in your country and get them to refer you to their Clinical Physican for their opinion. My teeth will eventually look how they should have looked in probably less than 2 years if not for the incompetent orthodontist I started with!!!!

I spoke to my ortho about the same problem after posting about it on this forum, and he said the aligners can be altered to correct the open bite, and it shouldn't take too long to sort out.Hope you can speak to your ortho about it and get some answers. Good luck

Seconded. Align does not direct patients to specific providers. It isn't their mandate. The provide a list of doctors available on their doctor search. It is up to individual patients to determine who the best provider is for their particular situation. I am unaware of any "clinical physician" who provides opinions on their behalf.

Still, I agree that individual Invisalign doctor experience is still very far beyond the marketing for Invisalign in many offices.

    Dr Tam,

I contacted Align Tech due to my incorrectly made retainers. I no longer am in my providers care as the process is completed and since I made payment directly I thought that they would have some type of customer service.

Your doctor is your liaison with Align Tech. If there are ever any problems with a patient's aligners or retainers, we contact the company on their behalf. The public is not able to order these medical appliances on their own.

Keep in mind that our Invisalign treatment plan includes some visits after treatment is completed for this very reason. Many offices will have additional fees for monitoring of retention. It is something to consider when comparing "prices" of Invisalign care.
