Getting a veneer while wearing a retainer after invisalign

Hey went to orthodontist today to see if that was me finished with invisalign and after 15 initial trays and 6 refinement trays I am happy to say that I am finished!! Yay!! But now I have to get my top front left tooth sorted as I broke it when I was younger and it has a dirty big crown thingy on it that looks hideous!! However, was speaking to my ortho today and asked him bout the fact that when I go to normal dentist to get veneer they will have to file my crown down to get it ready and to fit me for my veneer then it will take a few weeks to get the veneer made and I still have to wear my retainer at night, which Im thinkin wont fit in the few weeks it will take to make the veneer. I asked him bout this and he said that the dentist will have to put something in the tray or on my tooth so my tray will fit and keep my teeth in place. I dont really understand what he means. Has anyone else had to get a veneer or veneers done after invisalign?? How did it work out?

Congrats on being finished! What a thrill, eh?!

When my husband had similar work done, the dentist fashioned a very temporary "tooth" for him so that he looked more as he normally does. I suspect your dentist can do something similar for you. Also, there are some Invisalign wearers who have fake teeth inserted into the trays to keep other teeth from tipping while things shift about. That, I suspect, would be yet another option for you.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

    Congrats on finishing your treatment!

In order to have your veneer made, the tooth will need to be modified from it's current shape. It takes some time for the lab to fabricate your veneer, so there is a period of time during which you will have a temporary veneer that is made chair-side. Since you are having dental work done, it will change the shape of this tooth, and your aligner will no longer fit.

It is important to make sure you have some sort of retainer during the time between your temporary and final veneer to ensure that the teeth do not shift. This may take some coordinating between your dentist and your orthodontist. Hope this helps!

Thanks for asking this. I am in refinement of my upper trays and when I am finished also need a new crown to replace a very old, very ugly one. I was wondering about this same thing myself, so it's good to hear that it is possible.
Now if someone could reassure me as to what happens when a crown is replaced.....I'm terrified!

I have just had check up and discussed options with my dentist, he didn't seem that worried that my retainer would need to fit my teeth during the 2 weeks that it will take to get veneer made so I have left this now up to my orthodontist who I have left a message with and he will get back to me on Thurs. Think I will need to get a retainer made for the 2 weeks as my tooth will be a different shape. I will let u know how it goes but it will not be completed til Sept. Thanks for the feedback

Ok so eventually got my veneer fitted after what felt like a long time. When I first went to the dentist, so he could prepare the tooth and get a impression, he was simply going to send me on my way with no temporary veneer and it looked awful! So I asked him if he would put SOMETHING on it!! He put together something that looked like what I had before but it was stuck on and he said would fall off really easily.... which it did. Luckily my retainer still fitted ok but being the vein person that I am I couldn't go out and about without the temporary veneer. So I took drastic measures, I stuck it in each day with polygrip!! I know it seems crazy but it worked quite well and didn't bond anything to my teeth as my dentist was so weary of that as he wanted my permanent veneer to fit well. Also the issue of worrying bout my retainer fitting wasn't really an issue. Then last Thursday I got my permanent veneer in and I am so happy with it. Also yesterday had a look and compared my 1st and last invisalign trays and then looked at my final retainer I got made on thurs after I got my veneer and I can't believe the difference!! I'm really happy with the results, you sort of forget how far you have come so it is sometimes good to look back. So so happy!!
