Question about Invisalign's Problems with Overbites

    Hello,

I searched the forum and could not find any other threads that had the same question as mine. I apologize if this is a repeat of someone's question.

Recently, I went to two orthodontists and both said that because of my complete overbite I am not a candidate for Invisalign. Since these visits, I have thought of a question I should have asked the doctors: why is it necessary to not have excessive overbite for Invisalign?

The only thing I want to do is straighten my teeth. I really do not care as much as "fixing" my overbite; I can chew just fine. It was my understanding that the main point of braces is to straighten the teeth and that anything else, including overbites, would be secondary.

Basically, is it possible for me to use Invisalign to just straighten my teeth and not work on my overbite?

I appreciate any responses because I am having a hard time to find the solution to my problem.

Orthodontic treatment is supposed to deal with the alignment of teeth, as well as how the two jaws fit together. While to the general public, the former may be more important, the latter is also of extreme importance for overall function, health, and stability.

That being said, a lot of patients seek orthodontic treatment just to line up the teeth. Most people also confuse the term overbite with overjet. Assuming you are referring to overbite correctly (that your top teeth completely cover your bottom teeth when you bite... not how the top stick out compared to the bottom), what you should know is that Invisalign has a tendency to deepen the bite. Extremely deep bites can cause periodontal problems due to excess trauma of the lower teeth on the uppers, and also influence the position of the top teeth.

Speak to the doctors and let them know exactly what your goal is to see what types of treatment options are available. Good luck!

Edit: My questions were resolved by consults with general dentist, periodontist and orthodontist. First I was told my gums are in good condition. Second Invisalign is inappropriate for my case, while conventional treatment options are appropriate if I choose to go forward with treatment. It would appear from the general and especially the orthodontist opinions that Invisalign should never have accepted the case. I'm done with Invisalign in the morning when I get the attachments removed.
