Invisalign Impressions May Soon be a Thing of the Past :)

I've been asking about this for a couple of years, but it finally looks like Align Technology is making a commitment to trying to eliminate the need for PVS impressions to begin treatment. Currently, the cost of the scanners is the price of a nice car, but hopefully this will change. This is really exciting :). Take a look at the press release below.

    Holy...

This is very interesting. Will this knock off transit time in regards to having trays delivered sooner? Just my imagination talking here, but I think it'd be cool to have that scanning machine incorporated with others. One, having the 3d model immediately sent off to Align tech. Within a 24-72 hour time frame have a tech send back the predicted movement. Second, have the clincheck sent as a video for the client and a set of instructions (software) for the secondary machine that makes the trays in the office.
Starting refinements in 2 weeks.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to comment anyway... My orthodontist has this technology and I got to have this done instead of impressions. I've gotta say, this this technology is awesome! I had impressions made for a retainer as a child, and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I remember gagging so much, I am SO happy I didn't have to go through that to get my invisalign!!

My ortho has this technology in her office too. I had my "impressions" made with the 3D technology last November. So much better and easier than impressions! I am now on tray 24 of 51 and things are looking great! Bottom attachments are coming off after tray 26 but top ones are on until the end.

    Start date 11/15/11.

When I started (April 2011) I had impressions. For my first round of revisions (late May 2012) I had the 3D scans. The scans were AWESOME! They took a few minutes longer than getting impressions as they scan each and every tooth twice (from cheek side and then from tongue side of tooth), but at no time was I thinking I was going to gag. Also, my trays seem to fit much better with less sharp ridges (still a few once in a while).
    5/03/2011 Started Round 1 28U/28L
    6/01/2012 Finished Round 1
    3D digital scans for refinements
    6/29/2012 Refinements #1 18U/18L
1/29/2013 Finished Refine #1 3D digital scans for refinements
3/07/2013 Refinements #2 16U/16L started 4 attachments , 2 buttons, elastics from upper canines (cutout) to bottom first molars (buttons)
    Total trays - 28+18+16 = 62

Align is making a big push to get more scanners out this 4th quarter of 2012 with some aggressive pricing. Hopefully it will mean more patients will get to experience this great technology providing better fit and a more comfortable experience. Great to hear that many on this forum have enjoyed the scanner!

I did both the scan and the impressions, it would have been nice to only do the scan, but maybe the impressions double check everything?

I had two scans when I had mine. They said one was for invisalign and one was for their office. Maybe your impression was for their office?

It's 2012, digital scans should be used. No reason for impression goo.
