Those with 20+ trays, how many refinement trays?

I'm on my 2nd last tray for my first go round (21/22 upper and lower). Can't believe it's been almost a year. My ortho had originally said that younger people like myself generally get 1) half to 3/4th of the original tray # on their first refinement set: so that's 11 - 16.... and 2) a second set of refinements with half the tray # of my first refinement set... so that's 6-8

This seems like a whole lot! My teeth have come a long way and look great. I can't imagine what all these extra refinements can do.. but I guess we'll see when I go and get impressions done.

Just out of curiosity, those with 20+ trays on their first go round, how many refinements did you have? and how many trays in those refinements?

I had 20U and 19L for my first course of aligners. I'm now on my first round of refinements, and have 13U and 9L.

There isn't really an "average" number of refinement trays you should expect. Many of our patients with 26 trays or less don't need refinement. Some of them we give 26 trays to initially, knowing full well we are expecting another 26 aligners for refinement or mid-course correction. The better the teeth move in the original set of trays, the fewer sets of trays you will need moving forward. This is very much going to depend on the skill of your orthodontist and their ability to match movements in a video to how the teeth will move in real life.

Like Dr. Tam said, I doubt hearing anyone else's numbers will be predictive but since you asked...I had 24 trays initially and 15 refinements..I'm on 15/15 but I know I'm going to need another round..one of my bottom front teeth is tilted and created a gap. I just don't remember if two rounds of refinements were in the deal we discussed initially. I have my appointment tomorrow so I'll know better then.

I had 23U/23L with attachments and elastics over about 18 months with no refinements. My teeth were very crooked. They're nice and even now.
