Passive Trays? ... any one know this is right?

    Hii

This is a random question but I have 35 Upper trays in this set and 28 Lowers . For that 7 tray difference at the end my ortho has told me invisalign will provide a passive lower tray so every 2 weeks I will always have new trays both top and bottom.

From reading this forum I have never come across this situation everyone seems to have spoken about trying to time the last trays in quite a complicated way to spread the time out. If this makes sense. All I would like to know is if anyone else is expecting this towards the end of their treatment?

Ohh and to everyone who helped out when I was asking about retainers my ortho got back in touch eventually.... It will cost me £250 at the end of my treatment for 3 sets of vivera retainers. Which I should wear as much as possible for the first 3 months then slowly ease into night time wear only ....(everyone seems to have different quotes for this.)

... hope everything is going well for you all

The passive trays are a way to allow you to have a fresh tray for the arch that will be finished treatment faster. It is an alternative to needing to stay in your last tray while you have 7 more aligners (14 weeks) for the upper. This way, you can have fresh trays for both arches for 35 aligners and then begin retention or refinement for both arches at the same time.

    Thankss Dr Tam

I just thought it seemed unusual that no one else had mentioned it. I quite like the idea of having fresh ones all the way to the end of the set to be honest. I wonder why all orthos don't plan this into their treatments ?

Good question, since most patients on this board have mentioned it. Some doctors may be certain that there will be no refinement for one arch and want to start retainers then.

All of our patients actually get the same number of upper and lower aligners, unless there is a huge discrepancy between how many I would need for each arch. I simply modify the amount of movement happening in each arch.

I will have 9 passive trays. I am curuous if I will feel any differense when I change from one passive tray to another. What I am thinking about is whether the trays get old and change their shape after being used for 2 weeks.

I`m wearing passive trays now and with each tray may teeth are very sore for the first 2 days like it is active tray. I do not know why!

I also have an uneven number of top and bottom trays - 20 for the top and 13 for the bottom but my ortho so far hasn't said anything about passive trays. I'm really hoping he does though as they sound a lot better than just wearing the same old bottom tray for months while I wait for my top teeth to be done!

My question is - I have six attachments on my lower teeth - will these be removed when the bottom teeth are finished or do I have to wait for the whole treatment to be done before they are removed?

I will have 24 upper and 10 lower trays. My ortho said nothing about “passive” trays, but did say I will have retainers to wear at night for a year or two after completion.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there any reason I would need to wear a tray on the lower while still wearing on the upper? If you don’t need them all day and are at retainer stage, why wear them at all?

I don't really know why. I guess it is because it's in general better to have reatiners all the time than only in the night. And since you will have one in the mouth anyway why not to have to. Moreover I think that the mouth will feel and look a bit weird with a retainer only on one jaw because even thin these trays change a bit the lips appearance and in my case people can notice difference in my lips when I have my trays on. I can see it too.

    Scrap that :(

Ok I have just had my appointment with my ortho I am 2 parts ecstatic to 1 part miserable after coming away.

Good news first my treatment is coming along perfectly and my ortho was sooo excited at my progress in the last 5 trays. Everything is going well and I got to look at my last set of aligners which may be months and months away but it made me super excited they are AMAZING haha!

On the down side I am a bit disapointed... my ortho had said at the beginning of treatment that I would be supplied with a passive tray up until the end of treatment because I have 7 more aligners on top than bottom. I questioned why there was only a top aligner in the packets at the end... she said that was normal and that you just wear your last bottom one until the tops finish. (why was I told one thing at the begining and reality is different?) This would be fine if it was just a couple of weeks however its 7 trays .. 14 weeks 3 and a half months wont that bottom tray just get wrecked?
Normally my trays are starting to look a little shabby after a 2 week interval and I can't wait to put a fresh one in....

Any one got any tips on keeping them in great condition because that one will definitely need taking care of. Wont be at that stage until August mind.

I just found out I'll have the same issue and I'm not very happy about it. Only I'll have the same lower tray for close to 6 months. If it starts to get a little yucky after 2 weeks, I can't imagine months and months of the same tray.

Next time I go in I’m going to ask for additional passive trays.

I know I was thinking about bringing it up again with her. She seemed to think it would be fine for me to wear 1 tray for 3 months .. your 6 seems super long.

My worry is i'm going on holiday during this time and come on i'm going to drink a lot more crap that week the tray is going to look like its been living in a fish tank.

Is it even possible for them to order in more passive ones?
