I found my own orthodontist and used this process a lot like a job interview.
In Australia we pay for consults, but I saw this as an investment in the future of alleviating my jaw pain and therefore well worth the money.
I had questions to ask the orthodontists, some of these were asked during my initial phone calls. I then choose some orthodontists to consult with, and finally I re interviewed a couple and then choose the people I now work for. ... I wasn't working for my orthodontist when I chose him.
My advice to all our patients, is choose a person you can communicate easily with. The type of brackets they use will not affect how your teeth move, but how you feel about them will have a huge affect on how you feel about your treatment. The spin off is, that people who aren't happy with their treatment generally don't follow the instructions their ortho's give them, and therefore their treatment will often be slower and less satisfactory.
