    Surgery? Or not?

Hi there, am new to this forum and still need to make my decison about surgery!

Ok basically..I just want some opinions I guess and I really have no clue what way to decide.

The bit about my teeth that bugs me the most- the gaps at the top where teeth have been pushed out of the way due to lack of space can be fixed without jaw surgery. However if I want my teeth and bite to fit better, I need to have the jaw surgery. I've been told that as my teeth don't look that bad jaw wise on the outside that braces will make my teeth look worse before the surgery and that bothers me as I hate my teeth enough as it is!

The other thing that petrifies me is the pain and staying in hospital and recovery. Part of me is thinking just go for it, it's got to be worth it as I've had teeth I've hated for years and surely I deserve to have the teeth I want but I'm not sure if I can go through with it.

I've been told that if I decide I definitely don't want the surgery then they will close the gaps at the top and take teeth out the bottom and straighten them as best as possible but they can't really say how well this will turn out and that obviously wouldn't help with my jaw positioning or bite.

So idk..just opinions anyone..please? It's been months since my last hospital appt and I really need to get back to them with a decision.

    Thanks.

In so far as pain is concerned, my ortho advised that many people are numb for days/weeks/months and sometimes permanently after the surgery as a natural side effect of the surgery from the nerves being moved around.

If you do have to have surgery and get the braces first, the braces are to get your teeth in the position they need to be so they'll line up after surgery. Just know that going in - while your bite looks worse to you, it's only temporary and just think of the results you'll get when you come out surgery and the swelling has gone down.

your teeth will gradually slide into "surgery mode" and you really won't notice the bite get worse as it happens slowly.

If insurance will cover it, than i would go for it to get your bite wher eyou want...

I have the same problem. I have 10mm overjet. Theer are 2 options: surgery and braces to fix crowdings, or braes for bottom crowdings and top (removing 2 premorals and pulling teeth back) I donbt know what to decide. And surgery is very expensive thing. Just would like to hear some feedback from people who had similar problem (overjet) and were treated either 1st or second method....Are any disadvantiges of 2nd option, read somewhere that removing premorals could cause TMJ, don't know how much of this is true though....And as for surgery there is recovery time and dont think I could afford it I have to work

That's the exact choice I have to make. I'm up in the air over it also.

    Camouflage

i just wonder if people who chose camouflafge method (extractions and pulling teeth back)were satisfied with effects: look of the face, did look of the lips or chin changed for better. I am sure people who had surgery probably have more benefits, but i WOULD BE SCARED to go surgery, and too much time recovery takes. I will probably go for no surgica option but I am affraid what idf I wont be satisfied and my face will look worse (which seems to be impossiible

I'm with you.. any surgery is scary, however in cases of bad bites due to jaw structure it is really the only option if you want it fixed.... Everyone I have talked to that has had it done has said it was 100% worth it... so that says alot.

If you are concerned about the surgery, than ask your orthodontist or do research on bone screws. They actually implant screws into your jaw bone to use as anchors to pull teeth back and such... This isn't a perfect solution, but it is getting more and more attention by patients and doctors that don't think surgery is needed for the patient...
