Oral And Maxıllofacıal Surgeon and Plastic Surgeon

Hi everyone, I need ask. as you know, İn USA for jaw correction-jaw surgery, people go to mostly ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON to be fixed jaw. on the other and I dont know situation in USA I wonder that does plastic surgeon perform such things operations, or people can choose to go plastic surgeon for Othgontachic surgery, either does plastic surgeon have any competence for jaw surgery. I live in Turkey people usually go to orthodontists to be taken idea of their bite and orthodontists can send them a plastic surgeon or oral and maxiılofacial surgeon. it is kind of a chose for patient and there is a argument about who should perform such operation and in Turkey both of them have competence and can do jaw surgery. I wonder situation in EU as well. Thanks everyone also, if someone knows, what is real difference between them and who should do it at least why ? thanks everyone, I wish you good smiles now and in future

Oral surgeons deal with issues to do with the jaw, that is why they are the ones that should be consulted when it comes to doing work that is related to this area. I guess it's a bit like comparing dentists and orthodontists, they both work with teeth, but one works more with the health of the teeth, while the other has additional training so they can study and work with how teeth need to be placed for the bite to work best.

Where I work, we have a few surgeons we refer our patients to, so that they can choose the surgeon they feel most comfortable with. We recommend our patients consult with at least two of these surgeons. These surgeons are all oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

We have had a few patients choose some types of cosmetic surgery, but that's been more about issues that relate to fixing cosmetic issues and not to correcting bite or surgical issues.

Good luck with research and I should add another good way to help choose the right surgeon is to ask to see a selection of before and after photos.
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

Jaw surgery is so much more complicated and time consuming that pretty much any other surgery that a plastic surgeon does that you probably want stick with someone that exclusively does jaw surgery or does a certain # of cases a year to feel confident in your choice. I think it is just less worrisome to choose someone whose only focus is on jaw surgery, not someone doing a face lift or boob job most of the time. I found one surgeon in US that does plastic surgery and jaw surgery, but he still had to become a dmd first, then he spread out into more stuff so really, how much jaw surgery does he do in a year now compared to someone ONLY doing jaw surgery. I was tempted to go to him because he offered a good price, but I had seen internet controversy over him and he is out of state and I think being such a major procedure it is best to stay close to home. You may want to choose between a jack of all trades, master of none, and a master of one thing who doesn't do anything else except maybe chin or nose.
