Question Can the need of braces be fixed by surgery ?

    Hi guys,

In todays world is it possible to do surgery instead of putting braces.. ?
My lower teeth are foward to my upper teeth, so i have to get my bite corrected, I have gaps in my teeth specially my lower teeth. + my lower lip is also out abit and my smile needs to be better.

So is it possible in todays modern world that can you do surgery and fix this or i have to go through 12-18 months of braces ?

Not that I'm aware of, due to the teeth needing to be in the correct positon for the bite, before surgery, then they have to be held there for some time after and final tweaking done so that the surgery is not at risk of relapse ... usually about six months post op.

Go see a orthodontist and ask. Good luck!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

Xamanus if you're working with good orthodontist's, they'll only do surgery if it's needed, not because you want it. If the problem is caused by your skelaton (your bones) it will require surgery, but if it's caused by dental (where your teeth are in these bones), then it's braces without surgery. Extensive x-rays need to be done to be certain of this, and until that's done, some ortho's may mistake one for the other.

Your treatment time will depend on what needs doing. Mostly our surgical patients take around 12 to 18 months to get their teeth where they need to be before surgery (some earlier, some longer), then there's surgery and recovery and usually another six months of work to ensure the bite is stable to prevent relapse of surgery. It's important to remember that if your bite isn't correct after surgery, then surgical relapse is high. This is why it's important to have the teeth in the right place before surgery.

Talk to a few ortho's to get timelines. If you're working to a 'tight' deadline, I recommend you wait till after this to have ortho treatment. When ortho's and surgeons give time frames they are only estimates and many things can change these time frames. Many patients finish early ... but many don't.

    Good luck!

Fantastic that your treatment has started!

Many of our patients never feel pain ... one of the advantages of the modern archwires and ceramic brackets. I've never needed pain meds, but I've needed wax, warm salt water rinses and I've kept my hydration levels excellent!

You will adjust to eating ... the more you do it, the easier it gets. Make sure you drink water when you're eating, as it helps to keep the food washed away from your brackets and it also helps keep your hydration levels high.

Time ... any time is an estimate, due to many factors like how your teeth move, your compliance etc. One thing to be certain of, your ortho will not want you as a patient one second longer than is necessary, as the sooner a new patient replaces you, the sooner more money is made!

    Good luck!

Yes, in some cases you can do surgery without braces. The result may not be as desirable, but it may be possible in your case. You do have other options. Depending on where you plan to study, there are great orthodontists around the world. You could have treatment while in school, conceivably. Some orthodontists are also doing Invisalign in conjunction with orthognathic surgery. You may be able to have more modern treatment without surgery depending of the case. I trained in an what can be considered an orthognathic orthodontic program and have dealt with cases you could not imagine, but with the new technology we are treating some really significant skeletal problems with braces only. Ten years ago these same cases would have definitely required surgical intervention. Best wishes, drd

You can continue with sport, but you need to wear a special mouth guard that your ortho can organise.

Before and after pics ... check out the blog section of this forum and ask your ortho if they have some to show you.

    Good luck with your treatment!

    Xamanus,
Sunny is right and as long as you don't use the boil and bite mouthguard you should be fine. We make 600-800 football mouthguards each year for local teams and quite a few of these kids have braces. We make those differently to allow continued tooth movement during the season, but you can get the same effect with some of the off the shelf mouthguards at the local drugstores or your ortho probably has some of them as well. best wishes, drd.

to be honest i never encountered one undergoing surgery without any braces before and after, not until now! i saw his videos in the youtube and it says he didn't wear any braces pre opt and post opt. i didn't know it was possible but as far as i can see from his videos the results was great!
but id prefer to wear braces before and after because that's the standard and must procedure and for stability also of the occlusion.

    Custom Mouth Guards

I suggest better go for dentist recommendation but as per my experience this issue can be resolved with good quality custom mouthguard/barces.
