    Underbite surgery

I met up with my dentist and he told me that i have skeletal problem and I need to have a surgery in order to align my teeth or to mask it. I chose the surgery path and I am going to remove my wisdom teeth next month.

I am kidda scared. This is no joke. I have to remove 4 wisdom teeth prior the surgery and I have no idea how to survive with it. Many people told me that I can take leave from school if i manage to take out my wisdom teeth and I am not looking forward to that.

I am going to take my major examination this year and i am uncertain whether the surgery experience might cause me to underperform in my tests and examinations. Need some opinions around.

If you your wisdom teeth aren't too complicated, than it is a rather easy procedure. I had 1 tooth that was deep into the bone that had to broken into several pieces to get out... The others came out easily and I had no swelling. so could of recovered on a long weekend... but the complicated one I had taken out years later, had me quiet swollen, but no pain...

As for the underbite surgery, it is a good idea if your bite is bothering you. It is more and more common and if you go on twitter you will see hundreds of people talking about their surgery daily.

It is definitely bothering me; however, i am kidda scared that the trauma that i got from the surgery might cause me to underperform for this major examination. Like I heard of people losing their lower jaw nerve and inevitably affects their life in one way or another.

I agree with Mike that the wisdom teeth surgery is far less traumatic than it may sound. I had three removed at once (the other a few years earlier), and I was back to work and normalcy after about 48 hours. If you have a tough extraction, you may need to pamper yourself for a bit longer, but probably not too long!

As for the jaw surgery, can you wait until after you have taken your examinations to have the surgery? That way you won't have to deal with any potential issues, but better yet, you'll be able to focus on your studies and not medical concerns.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hi Peter, all surgery is scary, but you shouldn't be worrying about these things now. Instead become well informed and ask loads of questions of your surgeon and find out what the plus and minuses are.

The removal of wisdom teeth is rarely a problem for patients and most don't require any time away from their usual activities. It's about making sure you follow the post surgical instructions given to you and letting the healing take place by making sure you're healthy, not smoking etc.

Jaw surgeries are a bit more drastic and there are more risks involved with regard to loss of feeling, nerve damage etc. Many people don't get full feeling back for a year or two and it can be frustrating to have the 'tingle' feeling for so long, but most seem to agree that they'd rather have their new bite than their old one, which means they prefer the surgery.

In general trauma that is planned, for example surgery, does not cause a person to underperform. You need to be well informed and take responsibility for your health and your study and this shouldn't be an issue.

Good luck and make sure you ask questions of all your specialists!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

hang in there bro.... take care of it now and enjoy the smile and functional bite for the rest of your life... I've had braces on for about 5 months now and don't even notice them. My appointments are every 8 weeks, so it really becomes no big deal... I know the surgery recovery is going to suck.. I especially don't want to drop any weight or muscle mass, but I'll deal.

Right now it is key to find doctors you are confident in...
