Orthognathic surgery is extremely complicated so there is no way any student doctor could be doing it alone, an experienced doctor has got to be there with them. I think all surgeons need assitance, I think even my surgeon has a resident or maybe it is a doctor doing a fellowship, the next level after doing residency, assist him to further their training while helping him do the procedure because from what I understand it cannot be done alone? I had resident for my chin reduction and a trained doctor was there also, I really have no idea if he just stood there and watched or what, but that was good enough for me, but chin was fairly minor surgery.
Using a teaching facility to have orthodontic work and/or surgery if you are paying out of pocket might mean big savings so that would be your reason I guess. I tried the teaching hospital route, but they would not take my case, no over or under bite, just cosmetic for being too long, excess maxillary and also sticking out too far, my top teeth so my jaw needs to up and back meaning I need to do both jaws. Just see if price wise there is truly a savings bec dealing with a busy public facility like that can be a hassle over a private place. Like when I tried 2 times to go thru a teaching hospital they made me come back and see this person and that person only in the end to have 2 places end up refusing to do it and both were a quite a trip to get to for me. But for me it was because of more unusual problem and it being a cosmetic issue with no bite problems so they didn't want to get involved or weren't qualified enough to take this type of case. So I do hope the doctor I found that said he'd do it is sure that he will move it the right way to achieve the result I'm looking for. He's def not young so I think he could easily have 25 to 30 years experience and he does work at a major NY hospital so I'm assuming he knows what to do even when other doctors turned me away, doctors in the same field.
