Bianca,
Please, please do due dilengence before having surgery. I don't think they stress the possible complications enough. I am a RN and thought I was confident of going through unscathed. Alas, I was wrong.
I had orthongathic surgery in March of 2010. I am still dealing with numerous issues. A non-union of my mandibular symphysis required another surgery in Dec of 2010 and I am presently at a delayed union status (6 months from 2nd surgery). Unknowingly, the original surgery completely blocked all sinuses on one side of my face, resulting in a massive infection that invaded my orbital bone. This required surgery in 3/2011. I actually had eye tissue in my sinus cavity at the time of surgery from a hole that was caused by the infectious pressure. My sinus problems have not yet resolved. I have nerve damage to my chin/lips; which does not sound like a big deal; but - you use those nerves for speaking, eating, drinking, kissing..............I have to drink through a straw - room temp., my speech is affected and believe it or not, my bite is completely off on one side so I can't chew on that side. My front bite was changed to the point that I can't "bite" hard items at all and soft items just tear; making a mess. I bite my bottom lip constantly.
I live in Dallas Texas and have access to the best medical care anywhere, yet here I am which poor results that seem like they are going to be permament. No one knows where to go from here and they all seemed reluctant to direct me. (Dentist, orthodonist, oral surgeon, etc)
I wish someone had strongly urged me to live with what I had.
I wish someone knew what to do now.
Good luck, I'm sorry to share unpleasant news with you but I had (and still have) a hard time finding people to talk to about "the other side" of the wonder story. People need to beware.
Marci B
