Social 6 just been fitted, but over front 8 teeth

As a complete novice I had my new social 6 STb braces fitted 2 days ago, however my dentist has recommend that he fits them over the front 8 in order to achieve the right level of pulling power needed to bring my top front teeth back in line. I can now see why they're called social 6 as the back 2 REALLY dig into my tongue meaning it's painful to talk and swallow. Whenever my tounge moves forward it's like having 2 pins cut into my tongue. Had they been on just the front 6 I can see that it would actually be fine. Has anyone else had this done at all? Is there anything I can ask my dentist to do that will make it less sharp at all?
