Unhappy Braces

Hi everyone i know you have all heard people complain but why oh why at 28 do I need braces??? i am here to vent which I am sure most people do and my summer hasn't been going well with a broken wrist so yes i am falling apart here! I wasn't happy with my prior dentist and decided to switch my teeth were bothering me and after many xrays, poking and prodding my teeth he says Dave you need braces for your top teeth. Now I don't have the best eyesight but my teeth look pretty good, never had braces as a kid and go to the dentist twice a year. Turns out my last dentist filled 5 cavities and somehow caused spaces in between my teeth where food is getting caught causing more cavities. He thinks braces are my best option to close these small gaps. He said clear braces maybe a metal wire and about a year.I AM NOT 12! My co worker has braces but she looks fine with them I think on men it's different.Anyway thats my story and maybe I will let you sign my cast if you talk the dentist out of it!

Well, first of all you are not alone! Braces really are no big deal.

I also think you are an excellent candidate of Invisalign! Your entire treatment will go basically unnoticed by your peers and you can take them out if you are going to a big social event or something where you would like them out.

I personally would seek the advice of a few different Orthdontist (not dentist). Ceramic (clear) braces are much cheaper and will get the job done just as good if not better, espcially if you need more work than just closing gaps.

Do keep us posted! 28 is sooooooooooo young.. you'll have them off in time.

I'm not 12 either. I hate to count how many years it has been since I was such a callow youth as that! And yet somehow I made the decision just a few years ago that I would wear braces, and I lived to tell the tale too. My personal opinion is that daring to wear fixed braces as an adult is a sign of maturity, and the realisation that the world doesn't in fact revolve around oneself

That said, I agree with Janesays that you may be one who is lucky enough to be a candidate for Invisalign.

Good luck.

I think you'd be amazed at how many adults get braces. I, personally, waited until I was 39 before I decided to fix my teeth. I was able to go with Invisalign, so they aren't AS visible as other types of braces, but had I not been able to, I would have gone with, most likely, metal brackets on the bottom and ceramic on the top (that's what my ortho does).

Braces have NOTHING to do with how often you go to the dentist, it has to do with how your teeth grew in your head.

Also, I would recommend seeing an orthodontist to discuss all of your options, not going with the first dentist you talked to who says you need braces, and only offers one option. Seek out a few opinions, and honestly, get over the whole "I'm an adult, why do I need braces" thing. It's way less becoming on a person than braces.
