New to braces - many questions

So...just got new braces for about a week and a half now. Don't notice much of a difference in movement...(sigh) so disappointed. ortho said it'll make 2 years give or take a couple of months.

I have the porcelain (clear) braces in the front and metal brackets in the back of my teeth. Initially Ortho gave me 2 options...removing a lower tooth and have the treatment done, which result in my top teeth not lining as straight as my bottom OR take a total of 3 teeth out (2 lowers and 1 upper) which would be the best. After much thought, I went for the second option because I heard if your teeth is too crowd after the treatment, your mouth would go back to the way it was before.

    Anyway my questions are:

    1. Correct me if I'm wrong but only the elastic ligatures (rubber bands) stain when drinking coffee, soda, eating curry etc. right? Not the invisible brackets. Also, HOW MUCH coffee and soda would you have to drink a day/month in order for them to be noticeably stained? Also, is it a good idea to use Listerine?

    2. I bought a pack of floss and threaders. I hope to decrease my treatment time by trying to floss everyday and brushing every time after a meal. If I do floss everyday how much time would I be reducing off of my treatment? If it means 1-2 months then that's not even worth it. Should I be flossing every other day, every day, never(?) since it does take a while to do?

    3. From my above description, I am pretty sure the majority of people with a crowded mouth have had teeth taken out prior to their treatment...how long would it take within the treatment for the braces to close the gaps between teeth?

    4. I know it depends but realistically how long would it take for me to notice results? i.e looking in the mirror and be like "oh the tooth moved" haha

    5. I've been reading some of the posts here and there seems to be a misconception about clear braces taking longer to straighten teeth than traditional metal and/or Damon system braces. Aren't clear braces not as strong as metal braces? Because they have more friction with the arch wires and therefore, are not as tight when it comes to the gradual movement of your teeth. I could be wrong but please clarify...

That's all the questions I have for now...I'm pretty sure I'll have more during my arduous treatment

This is when the teeth are loosening to prepare to move. Most people do not see obvious movement during the early week or two.

Brackets do not stain, but ligs, powerchains and elastics do. Some colour ligs will stain no matter what you eat, but certain foods/drinks do stain them more quickly. How much ... that's something you're going to have to check out, as it depends on so many things, like brand of coffee, black or white, how much milk etc etc etc. Also the shades of ligs ... clear, opaque, pearl, tooth coloured etc etc etc. Tomato, tumeric and some other foods with red and yellow colours in them, appear to stain most shades of ligs quickly. Yellow foods will turn blue ligs green ... and so on. I've found that black and purple don't stain ... which is great. Also wire ties don't stain. We offer teflon coated wire ties (white) to patients who want discreet braces.

... I floss every day ... and it's made no difference to my treatment time ... which has in fact blown out by more than a year. What it has meant though, is my gums are in excellent health. Great oral hygiene is important, but it's not known to increase treatment. Instead ... poor oral hygiene can delay treatment ... so that's definitely to be avoided.

You should be flossing once a day to keep your gums healthy. To begin with, flossing will take longer, but with practise it will soon get faster. Something you need to think about, are you prepared to risk having ortho treatment, and not looking after your gums and having to deal with gum disease in a few years ... and the possibility of your teeth falling out!

I had crowding, but my ortho didn't take teeth out, instead he's used IPR to remove some enamel from teeth to help make space and the archwires are doing the rest. Teeth aren't removed very often any more ... but there are still cases when it's necessary.

Gaps closing is an individual thing. We like to think that teeth will move about 1 mm a month ... but many don't ... some will move faster and some will move slower. My upper gap, over an impacted canine, has taken nearly two years to close ... damn nightmare of a gap!

Ummm anytime from now to maybe three months ... that's if you have loads of alignment work needing to be done.

It's a misconception ... brackets do not move teeth and it will take the same amount of time, as it's the archwires etc that do the work, and they're the same with the different brands of brackets. The new brackets are made with materials that allow the archwire to move as it needs to. Sometimes friction is necessary to help teeth move ... and sometimes it's not ... and any good ortho will make sure this does or doesn't happen as is necessary ... no matter what type of bracket.

Great questions ... it's good that you're thinking so sensibly about your treatment.

    Good luck!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
