Great that you've decided to have treatment and are happy with the ortho you have found.
Please make sure you research the use of expanders on adults, as it's not possible for the palate to be expaned after the bones fuse at adolescence, unless surgery is done. Expanders can be used by experienced orthodontists, who are very careful with treatment, as the work that's done is to 'push' the teeth out in the jaw bone. The issue here, is to make sure the teeth aren't 'pushed' out too far, as if there's not sufficient jaw bone remaining, there are risks that the teeth will stay loose and not have enough bone to hold them in place. Fortunately this doesn't happen often, but it's important that you be aware of this and make sure that your ortho is well trained in moving teeth in adults when using an expander.
Too find out more about your expander, ask your ortho for the brand name of it. Hopefully this will help you do more research about it.
How is your ortho going to treat your tongue thrust? I had a mild tongue thrust, but my ortho explained that it still had to be treated, as my tongue is such a strong muscle, it'd undo all orthodontic work if it remained untreated. I wore a 'blue grass' appliance and also saw a speech therapist who helped me to relearn how to swallow correctly and say some words. Good luck with getting your tongue thrust fixed, as it's a major problem that needs to be sorted!
Great that your treatment time will be so short! Good luck!![]()
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
