    Newbie Here!!

    Hey Everyone

I am 26 and been wanting to straighten my teeth since I can remember. Now I am a trainee Dental Nurse I have finally got the guts to go through with it!!!

Today I had my retainer fitted to expand my top pallet, I am getting my braces fitted in a month.

Today has been really weird, I have been spitting and lisping all day lol And eating is a nightmare!!!!

I basically came on here to speak to other adults who are new to braces or going through the process as I don't know anyone else my age who has them.

    Thanks for listening
    Emma

    Hi and welcome Emma!

It's great that you're doing this for yourself now ... and still while you're so young. You'll have many years to enjoy your new bite and smile, plus set a great example in your job.

Expanders can take some adjusting to and it's interesting that an ortho is using one with you if your pallet needs expanding. At 26 I'd suspect that you've stopped growing and your bones are fused. Are you also having surgery to break your pallet, so that it can truly expand, or is the expander to help push your teeth out in your jaw bone?

Good luck with adjusting and we advise our patients who need expanders to drink heaps of water and to talk and sing out loud as often as they can, as this seems to help their speech improve.

I look forward to following your story!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

    Hi Sunny,
    Thanks for the reply.

Well nothing has been mentioned about surgery.... and it sounds scary so im glad. lol The retainer is just helping because my top pallet is alittle narrow, mainly because my 4's are further in than my other teeth..if that makes sense. So its just to push them back out abit before the brace goes on. Il take some pics and put them up.

Im really hoping my speech gets back to normal soon, not enjoying this lisp at all!!

    Thanks again
    Emma
