Red face My Canines Didn't Come Through!

Hi,

I went for a normal x-ray, but found out that my canines (top and bottom) had not come through, the bottom ones weren't a problem but the top one's were as they were horizontal (instead of vertical) and were eating away at the roots of my two front teeth making them very weak as i have small roots anyway, i ended up having a op too take bottom canines out and my baby teeth next to the front ones, they also attached gold chains to the canines and have been pulled down, they have now appeared and i am waiting to see whats going to happen to my front teeth!

If you have any ideas or have the same problem please reply!

Laura x

Hi Laura

I have one impacted canine ... the upper right. You're very lucky that your's have been able to come down, as mine is lying vertical and attached to my jaw bone and has had to be left where it lies. It's too risky to remove or expose it, due to it's placement near nerves and the roots of other teeth.

In my case, my orthodontist is closing the gap, by bringing all the teeth behind where the canine should be, forward. This is a long procedure, but the gap is nearly closed ... which is exciting.

Hopefully your canines will settle nicely beside your lateral incisors and will stay there with ongoing retainer wear.

Good luck.

Aww thats a shame, my dentist mentioned something about moving teeth forward so i don't have a gap from the teeth being taken out before!

Good Luck, Glad Yours Is Nearly Sorted! x

Hi!!!
Reading your post has made me fill a little better about my own situation!! I have one impacted canine as well, it is the upper left one! Anyway they had attatched a chain and have been trying to pull it down for a little over a year now..uggggh... it hasnt really moved since it is lying sideways, my dentist says that continuing to pull it may cause damage to my other teeth in the area. Today I went to see the oral surgeon and he said we can either pull both my top canines and close the gaps or just pull the one and put in an implant! Do you have any thoughts on this?
Thanks for any advice!!!

Hi punkchk11

My oral sugeon ranked the best choices as ... exposure first, or remove and replace with an implant as second. If unable to be removed (as in my case) ... close the gap (first) or open the gap for a bridge or plate (second).

Talk to your OS and orthodontist about your options and ask them to help you make this decision. If you are still uncertain, have more consults.

If I'd been able to have my impacted canine removed, I'd have opted for an implant, as the canine teeth are very important for guiding your bite. This choice was taken from me, due to my canine not being able to be removed. The closing of the gap is going very slowly for me.

I wish you luck with your decision and look forward to hearing what you decide. Take care!
