Why were you not given a choice of retainers? If you have a permanent bottom wire in your mouth then that is in there for the rest of your life.
Can someone please help me?
Yesterday I got my braces off. My orthodontist gave me a normal, removable top retainer...but for the bottom he gave me a perminant wire retainer. I despise it.
He told me not to pick at it..and im not..but I felt some food stuck in it and im not sure how to get it out without messing up the cement around it..as he said it can break pretty easily..
Also, can someone please tell me what the average time length of having the perminant bottom wire is? Thanks..

Really I would have thought your ortho would have demonstrated how to clean it correctly to make sure you clean it right and do not cause damage to it.
The bonded retainer usually stays and is restuck if it comes loose. I should imagine you could have it removed if you requested it. Everyone who has braces needs retainers, and they will need to wear them for life... or as they say, for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight.
Did you not also get a removable retainer for the lowers? How are the other teeth (that are not attached to the bonded retainer) being retained?
Braces were fitted in late 2010. Still currently in braces.
