Got braces in china and cant chew!!!!

    Hello all,

I am new to the forum and first and foremost i would like to thank everyone who posts. These posts aided me in making the right decision at the ripe age of 33 to get braces.

I have had them for 3 days now. They do not hurt or feel sore yet, but I cant bite or chew my food! My teeth (molars..is that the word?) do not meet so all I have been able to do is drink liquids or blend my food to make it like baby food. Is this normal?

My orthodontist only put the bottom row of self-ligating braces in and not the top because he said he didnt have enough time to do both. He only comes in to Macau from Mailnland China once a month so he wont put the top ones on until next month. I asked him if that would make a difference with the delay and he said no. Is that true?

    Thanks for your time!

Hi and welcome to this forum Moddy!

Many people do not have both arches braced at the same time, and if your ortho says it won't make a difference, I'm sure that's accurate for your case.

Did your molars meet before you got your lowers brackets? I'm not sure why having one row of brackets would have changed your bite in only three days, unless it's due to your top teeth touching some of the lower brackets. Please believe, that eating will get better! It's important to try chewing and to not blend all your food, so that with practise you will work out how to chew again. You will find your bite will change, and you continue to learn new ways to eat during this process. After a while, you'll hopefully find you don't even think about this process, it'll be something your mouth just does.

Good luck with adjusting to having your treatment started!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

    Thank you Sunny!

That is excatly what it is! Two of my top teeth are touching my lower bracket!

Guess I will have to be a trooper until it all works out!

    Thank you Sunny.
