Braces lisp?

I have never had a lisp. But it seems like when I hear kids who recently got braces it seems like they have a slight lisp when they talk. Why is that?

Have you ever experienced a lisp when you have had braces?

I think because they may have some sort of appliance in their mouth.

But I am wondering for those people with just braces on their teeth,
Why do people get a lisp sometimes?

Having braces on your teeth can affect people in many ways. I found I've had a lisp at different times during my treatment, although I have been told by those around me that it's not very noticeable. It would seem it's due to the way my teeth have been moving, the opening of my bite and with my lower teeth being moved back, my tongue has had some major adjusting to do.

For some people, the brackets cause their mouth to close differently, and until such time as the tongue adjusts, a lisp may be noticeable.

Additional appliances in the mouth, for example expanders, nance buttons, TPA (Trans-Palatal Arch), tongue thrust appliances, elastics ... and many others, usually affect the way a person speaks for some period of time. Often it takes around two weeks to adjust, but some people take less and others longer.

It's great your speech has never been affected.

I have a rick-a-nator in right now with bottom and top braces and I think my lisp is really bad...it's been 3 weeks with slight improvements. But I have a feeling it's not going to get any better...I really hate it.

The Rainbow Passage ... This is a great tool used by many speech pathologists. It contains most of the sounds and phonetic combinations in the English language. Repeat this several times a day out loud. It’s great practice for getting your tongue used to talking around foreign appliances.

i had a lisp before getting braces due to my open bite and my mouth never truly closing all the way. the open bite has improved, but i still feel like i have a lisp, its possibly worsened.

Right now I have elastics and I feel like I have some sort of a speech impediment

Hopefully it won't take long for your mouth to adjust to wearing elastics and your lisp will disappear Mariah.

I think I have a mild lisp when I'm tired, or my mouth is dry. Other's don't seem to notice though ... which is good.

I've had this bite plate in since the 22nd June, so that is almost 2 months, but why have I still got a lisp? The orthadontist said it would go in 2-3 weeks but it hasn't. Im suppsed to have the bite plate in for another 2 months, I havn't even booked an appointment since I got them in, they said they would call!!

Around October/Novemeber time i should get my actual train tracks.... but do you have a lisp with that to? Or do i have a lisp just because the plate is on the roof of my mouth and clashes with my tongue?

My lisp was gone after about a week. It took me a while to get used to having something so foreign glued to my teeth and my lips just didn't know how to move over the brackets. I still can't say some 's' words very well sometimes and if my mouth is dry I get the lisp again.

I have not experienced any lisp with braces, talking did not feel very different. I also have an open bite and do not have a lisp but most of the time people say they cannot understand a word I say so I am not 100% sure. My tongue seems to get confused lol

Braces have caused me to have a slight lisp, nothing generaly noticable but it is rather noticable when my mouth is dry. The one thing that is quite annoying and is very noticable is a space that has opened up between my front teeth causes me to have a bit of a whistle at times and it is pretty bad with the letters "F" and "S" among others but those two are the worst. Hopefully that gap can be closed back up sooner rather than later.

Hell yeah!!! I just got my braces on and it's almost a month now and I have a lisp...=( it's sadddd I hate itt!!!! haha

I had a bit of a lisp after getting my braces.I think because I had/have gaps.

I mean I had a lisp when I first got my spacers, so I know that I am going to have one with my braces, my friends thought that I sounded cute with it. I kinda got used to it.

yeah got a bit of a lisp but worst of all i just got used to the brace bring in my chops then it broke so had to be sent away for repair took two weeks in that time my teeth moved back to old possition
got brace back in today and got the lisp back again uuuhhhh
