Few Questions

I am 19 and getting my braces on in about two weeks. My ortho said I will only need them on for a year & a half.

Being in college I obviously didn't want a bunch of metal in my mouth, but my ortho said she will make my top front four teeth invisible. My question is what does she mean by that? I was just browsing this site and see there are many different kinds of braces and I wasn't sure. Would she mean ceramic? Has anyone here had something similar done or have a picture?

I know it's probably weird that I didn't ask her, but I am always in a rush to get out of there.

Another question is - I am in paramedic school which means I am in the ER a lot working with patients and was wondering how long does it take to get used to the braces in your mouth? I plan on taking a few days away from the ER after I get my braces on, because I don't want to be spitting on patients or have my mouth swollen while in the ER.

Thanks.

It may take up to 1 week to adjust to the braces. For me it took 2 days. I think she means ceramic on the front 4.

Hi and welcome to this forum Jack.

If you are well prepared and take good care of your mouth, there should be no need to take any time off from the ER. Most people who get braces do not experience swelling or spitting, although you may find you have some excess salvia, but swallowing it is really the best way to deal with that.

Many ortho's offer the option of ceramic brackets on the upper six, eight or ten teeth. Maybe your ortho is only planning to do your upper four due to the other's not being so noticable. There are many different brands of ceramic brackets and each brand has it's only shading and style. You'll need to find out what your ortho uses from your ortho.

Be positive and confident that this will be a good experience for you!
