Shaving of front and back of the teeth...(is it a common procedure???)

Besides many mistakes done by my orthodontist there is one that I am not sure if is a common procedure like he said so I would like to know who here had it done.
After the assistant removed the braces the orthodontist came and shaved a few teeth front and back. I am not talking about the shaving between teeth that is done during treatment. I am talking about shaving front and back after the braces have been removed.
When I questioned him of so much shaving he said it was a common procedure. So I let him continues but
I felt he was " forcing" the teeth into a position.
I would like to know if this is indeed a common procedure and how many people had it done.
I would like to clarify that I am not talking about between teeth. He shaved between the teeth several times during the treatment even one week before the braces were removed.

Without photos of the before and after of the teeth shaved, I can't be certain about why your orthodontist did this, but yes it is quite common to have teeth 'shaped' at the end of treatment, which includes after the brackets are removed. Teeth that have been crooked, wear unevenly, and shaving pieces off them, helps them to fit together better and also this will help them to look better.

    Take care!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

I've heard of IPR (shaving enamel between the teeth) and I've heard of reshaping the incisal edge (the biting edge) of anterior (front) teeth to improve the shape, or remove small chips. But I've not heard before of purposefully shaving enamel from the front or back surfaces of the teeth. It sounds odd to me.
