    Wisdom teeth :/

hey again! so my dentist also told me to start thinkin about getting my wisdom teeth cut out since they're roots are only halfway grown and not full grown..it would be easier for me to do it sometime soon...but with all these payments and just the part time job id have to save up and do it in the summer. i was just wandering what are the price ranges for getting four wisdom teeth cut out and being put to sleep for it? i know it differs in your area and all that jazz but i was just wanting to know what you guys paid so i can get a general idea. i think my parents are going to help me out a little but i want to contribute as much as possible because there's no sense in making them pay a large hunk of it when im the one pursuing treatment. id feel bad.

oh and does it hurt too terribly bad? i love going to the dentist and i dont mind shots but the only thing im terrified of is getting my wisdom teeth cut out :/

When I had mine done it was about $400 per tooth including the anestesia(spellcheck).

I highly recommend you get this done before getting the braces on, as I really think it can influence your teeth down the road especially once you get them off.

The procedure is VERY painless and not a big deal as it has come a long way.. no longer do I see cheeks swollen like when I was young...

I recovered with pain killers for about 2 days.. and because yours are not very deep, yours might be even easier...

Shop around and negotiate with the surgeon.. they are huritng in this economy just like everyone else.

    Good luck

There's no way i can get them done before i get the braces on. with my parents paying 10,000 a year for my college and me paying for the braces. the money is just not going to be there right now. is it possible to have them taken out while you're IN braces? ...

I think you can get the wisdom teeth extracted while in braces. I've heard of people getting teeth extracted while in braces.

It's definitely likely to be easier whilst you're younger - the roots get larger through early adulthood. The other thing this means is that say ten years from now you'd have a greater chance of negative side-effects such as a (usually temporary) hole into the sinuses, or damage to the nerves in the lower jaw, which could lead to temporary or even permanent numbness in the lower lips and chin. (It's a pretty low risk anyway, but even lower when you are younger and the roots less developed)

My experience was entirely pain-free. Nastiest part was needing to vomit part way home. Swelling is to be expected, but can largely be managed and minimised by using ice packs. Follow your surgeon's after-care instructions carefully, and you should be fine.

Costs do vary a lot. It's not just where you are, but also the nature of the extraction. Soft impactions cost more than cleanly erupting/erupted teeth, and bony impactions cost more again. If things do not go completely smoothly on the day (say a root broke off, or something) so that the procedure ran longer than expected, then you could also need to pay extra above what was expected for anesthesia. Get your dentist to recommend a couple of good surgeons in your area and call around for quotations, but even so, expect some range to be given due to that uncertainty.

Mariah is right that it is possible to get them out even with braces, but it would be easier without. I can't imagine the extra hassle of changing out the gauze packing they use if there were brackets and wires onwhich it could all get tangled.

I had all four out before I got my braces back in the fall (I'm in my late 20s). It cost about $2000 (I was put to sleep) but insurance covered about 80% of it. Would you consider a loan to have this done? Interest rates are quite low right now.

It was a pretty awful experience but mostly because I had left it for too long and my bottom two teeth were impacted so I was of off of work for a few days. Once I figured how to schedule taking my pain meds it was all gravy.

Like others have said, you can get them out after you get braces but it may be tough to keep the extraction sites clean and you really really don't want them to get infected.

I had only one wisdom tooth (got lucky there) and it was extracted about 4 years ago. I guess mine was difficult to get out...while the actual experiance was not terrible, as in pain...although I did take my painkillers for 2 days! The hardest part for me was looking like I had been beaten up, I was bruised from my mouth, with bruising going all the way down past my neck and spreading onto my chest---never have I heard that from anyone else, but I had it and it looked awful...I literally looked like I had been punched--the surgeon told me he was almost standing on top of me to get it out! anyway...glad that's over with, but as for cost....my insurance covered 80% and my part, including ($200) deductible was about $400. So glad I had only one when I think about having to pay extra.
I cried all the way home I guess, I don't remember...my hubby had lots of fun telling me about it though. I was in crazy land, for that afternoon and the rest of the evening.
