What should I do with this overbite jaw? (pictures)

Hi, I'm looking for some advice to treat my overbite

My first question is, will braces fix my overbite even if the only time my back teeth meet is when my front teeth are overlapping at its fullest extent? It seems that my bottom front teeth are too high and braces would advance my jaw enough to prevent my back teeth from meeting... and even if I advance just a little, there's no chance I could chew on food...

Is there an alternative to treat an overbite? I heard that retainers could work too... Could that work in my situation?

My second question is, is surgery for my front tooth sticking out be a good option?

btw I have an appointement with an orthodontist but I can't wait a month

    Thanks!

Hi and welcome to this forum nads!

Great you've set up an appointment to meet with an orthodontist, as a professional is the only person who can tell what is best for your bite, as there are many things to take into consideration, that looking at photos can never show. Also think about making appointments to see one or two more ortho's, so you can hear more than one opinion.

Alignment issues like your photos show should easily be sorted with braces. Your right lateral, should easily move into alignment as the archwire rounds your upper arch. Overbites and overjets can be corrected with just braces and some need a combination of braces and surgery, for a stable result. The same goes for open bites ... where the teeth don't meet vertically. Ask the ortho's you consult with, if your results will be stable if you don't have surgery.

I'm not aware of what type of retainers would be used to correct your alignment and bite, but it's possible there's a system out there somewhere, that would inprove your teeth. Retainers are generally used after active orthodontic treatment, to ensure that your teeth stay in their new homes for the rest of your life. This is a life time commitment, but well worth it if you want your teeth to last a life time.

    Good luck with your research!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

Of course, I'm not a dental professional, but to me I'd say that's a Class II div 2 with a deep bite. In English, the upper teeth are too far forward in relation to the lowers, but the front ones are retroclined (they lean backwards) so that you do not see pronounced "buck teeth"; then also the front teeth overlap too deeply down over the lowers (I bet you can bite the little flap of gum behind those upper front teeth!)

A deep bite can often be pretty eaily corrected with braces, but as Sunny said, the relationship between the upper and lower arches may be corrected with braces, or may require surgery for best results. But only a qualified ortho, who can exaimne you in person, can tell you for sure what options are best for you.

Good luck - do let us know what you learn, and when you embark on treatment, keep a blog and pictures so that you can keep track of all the progress you make
I am not a dental professional.

As it says on the main Bracesreview.com page, always consult a qualified orthodontist, dentist, or medical professional with questions you may have.

    Thumbs up

I have serious overbite.. and I had braces for about a year, but I stopped growing so the braces had no effect and now have to have surgery to bring my bottom jaw forward. I'm slightly nervous but I visited this website, Welcome to Merrimack Valley Oral Surgeons Inc. and it made it wall look slightly more worth it
