I have recently got my metal retainer. When I first had it, I didn't feel any pain but couldn't eat with it due to it being uncomfortable. Now I wear my retainer every night and for a couple of hours in the day. I clean it in hot water to get rid of any debris that may be left in it (without myself knowing!) and scrub it thorough with a toothbrush. I can perform everyday activities but have to take it out for sport. As I do horseriding twice a week this can be very annoying. I go to sleep fine with my retainer on and usually wake up at 8.00am with it being seriously painful and aching. As I need to have a tooth pushed forward the spring doesn't hurt that tooth but the one next to it for some reason? The retainer is however hooking onto the one that is hurting. Has anybody got any ideas? Thanks. It is hugely appreciated.![]()
Give your ortho a call and ask Freddo. Also make sure the water you use to clean your retainers in, isn't hot ... warm only. Hot can affect the materials. Talk to your ortho about the best way to keep your retainer clean.

After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
