    Progression of orthodontic work...

    Hello,

I recently got my braces on and I was just wondering...are my teeth supposed to get "worse" and then better? what I mean by worse is that...it seems like the position of my teeth got worse then it was before...and I don't know if that is normal or not...I mean...it kind of worried me...but generally...throughout the treatment time...do teeth sometimes look worse then what they really were...and then eventually get better over time...or how is it supposed to go?

stCx it will depend upon what is needed to straighten your teeth and correct your bite. For many people, there teeth/bite do appear to get worse when the teeth come into alignment and then it often appears that the bite has become worse.

An example from my own experience is that to begin with my teeth were edge to edge. Then, as the lower teeth that were out of alignment, came into the arch, my bite became more class III as my upper arch then closed slightly behind my lower one. Then my molars didn't meet ... and now they do, my front teeth are in an open bite formation. So I have some sections that are better and some that are worse ...

Any concerns, talk to your ortho, but it is very common for the teeth/bite to become worse before they become better.
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

my edge to edge bite actually got worse and turned into an underbite too. It was a few months later that the teeth started to get tucked.... my teeth are not perfect by any means now that I have braces off, but i'm real happy with the results and time I put in.

My teeth have all kinds of weird spaces and such in them now, but that is only to make room for movement of the crooked teeth to straighten. I think it's pretty normal for teeth to look odd for a while as everything is moving around. I wouldn't worry too much, but honestly if you are nearing the end of your treatment and you aren't happy with how they look you should schedule an appointment with your orthodontist and make sure that you are on the same page with what your expectations are, and what they are actually able to do. Good luck!
