Live with gaps - Ortho said

I don't know if anyone else knows (newbies) of course that sometimes the end results aren't as expected. One thing for sure is that if you see gaps in between teeth it's something you have to deal with cuz there is no way of fixing that w/braces. If I knew this before i don't think i would have consider braces... found out too late..

    Good luck to all!

I thought braces should close gaps? That's the whole point of braces, to either close gaps, or fix crowding and bite issues. I don't have gaps in my teeth, I have the opposite (on the bottom), crowding. I had to have a tooth pulled and my teeth will now be aligned properly and straightened.

Sorry that you didn't get the results that you wanted, but I'm pretty sure braces should have CLOSED the gaps?

Depends on where the gaps are. Gaps at the gum line may not be able to be closed.

I didn't have much to fix, only my front tooth and i had NO gaps.. now there are gaps at the gum line and bottom parts which is something that can not be fixed. If I knew beforehand and if the ortho had told me about this I wouldn't have gotten bracess. but oh well...

Gaps at the gumline are a result of your gums shrinking, not your teeth moving. These gaps can't be closed, but some can be reduced. I've had IPR (shaving) done between some of my lower teeth, so that now they've been pulled together, the gaps are much smaller.

Sonyg ... this probably would have happened whether you'd had ortho treatment or not. Sometimes it's hereditary, sometimes due to poor hygiene around the gum area, over brushing the gum area, etc. Sometimes orthodontic treatment may speed this process up ... but for most people, it would have happened with or without orthodontics.
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
