    Clarity vs. Radiance braces

Do Radiance braces work as fast as Clarity? (Just the regular Clarity brackets, NOT the self-ligating ones.) I'm wondering if they don't since the Clarity have a metal reinforced slot which supposedly allows the archwire to slide better than if it were sliding against ceramic. My ortho was deciding between Clarity and Radiance (he has both) but said the Clarity would match my teeth a little better. I just got the Clarity 1 week ago and I'm regretting it. I hate how you can see the metal slot under the wire, I think it makes them so much more noticeable. I'm 28 years old, not excited about having braces for 18 months, so I really want the fastest yet least noticeable brackets. I've been looking at pictures and videos of people who have the Radiance and they seem to look so much better. Not just the fact that they're clear (I know they look best on super white teeth), but mostly because they don't have the metal on the bracket, all you can see is the thin little wire. I'm considering asking my ortho if I can switch to the Radiance (and even pay extra if necessary), but I don't want to delay my treatment time, so if the Radiance will make my treatment time longer by a couple of months since they don't have the metal slot, then I'll stick it out with the Clarity and hope the metal slot becomes less noticeable when I get my wire changed to a slightly thicker one. (I'm assuming I have the thinnest one now since I just started). Any info is greatly appreciated.

Tiffysbgirl I reckon you did the right thing to go with the bracket your ortho considered is the best choice for you. Brackets don't move teeth and as you state the clarity does have a metal slot so that it acts the same as a metal bracket, my understanding of the radiance bracket, is the slot is made of a material that works the same as metal ... so no difference.

In the early stage of adjusting to the look of having braces, we see things that other people would never see. Remember of course that most people will never notice you have braces on your teeth ... they're just not interested. The metal slot is tiny and most of it is hidden with the archwire, so for a person to see that, they'd have to be looking closely at your teeth, like you do when you look in a mirror. We are understandably consumed with our teeth and everything we see them do ... to others ... well I guess it would be about as interesting as watching grass grow.

Remember the pictures you see are a bit like looking at the pictures in magazines. They're mostly photoshopped and rarely look the same in real life.

The thin wire is the work horse of the memory archwires. It will align your teeth and get the movement going. Once it's job is done, your ortho will usually use thicker and thicker wires to do the job. Sometimes they use different shape wires and wires made of darker materials than stainless steel. There's no way you'll see that tiny piece in the bracket as you get to experience some of these different archwires.

    Good luck with adjustiing to your brackets and to you seeing progress soon! :thumb;
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

Thanks for your response, Sunny. I've definitely gotten a lot more used to the braces in the past week since I posted. I still wish I had the Radiance, but I trust that my ortho knows best and I'm caring less every day how they look.

Question for you... I read in another post you said you use an Oral B electronic toothbrush. I've been using the Oral B Triumph 9400 for about a year and I absolutely love it. However, since I got braces I've felt like it's too powerful. My teeth are not longer sore from the braces, except when I try to brush with my electronic toothbrush. Using just a regular toothbrush is fine, but the electronic one is uncomfortable/borderline painful. Did you have this problem at first? And if so do you recall how long it took to go away?

Great that you're feeling much happier!

I had a basic oral b toothbrush for many years. I bought it at a supermarket for about $20. It was great when I first got braces, although when I first wore elastics and had a bit of tenderness, I did notice it while using the electric brush.

For chrissie 2008 my hubby gave me the oral b triumph and I've used it ever night since then. I find it great and it warns if I should put too much pressure on the brush. Obviously I can't compare this to when I first got braces, but I'm confident you'll find it's great to use when your teeth sensitivity decreases. Keep trying it ... and good luck!

What do Radiance Brackets Look like?

I'm going to bump this thread to put in some pictures of Radiance brackets with some recent hoopla in another thread . I've been long promised these images by the rep, but I had to sign some papers in order to receive them. Here are some pictures of the brackets and you'll see why so many people are asking for them!. Our patients seem to love their appearance, we've had great results, and not noticed any difference in treatment time. Winners all around.

To be "clear", they work just as well as certain ceramic brackets, but in my opinion, and in the opinion of many patients, Radiance offers superior aesthetics when compared to others.

If you'd like to learn more, there's a blog entry about Radiance brackets here .

Hoopla?? What Hoopla??? Who on earth would come on this wonderful board and cause such a ruckus??

For what it's worth - I'm still in love with mine! I spoke with two other coworkers yesterday - one thought I'd taken my braces off completely, and the other said, "Oh, you changed to Invisalign". Even when I got right up in their face, they didn't get that there were brackets on my teeth. I can't imagine why these brackets aren't promoted more heavily...

Anyone who has an opportunity to get these... who may be a bit more self-conscious than normal with braces... GET THEM! It's done absolute wonders for my self-esteem.

(And Dr. Tam... I know you bumped this thread purposely so I'd see it... hehe)

    -Cathy

P.S. Thought I'd add a pic of a "real person" (ME) with the Radiance brackets. Wow - can't wait until that midline is fixed! LOL!

Denise: I hate you, too, for getting your braces off soon. And that's said with love... and my great big, CLEAR smile!

Hey Cathy!! I've been absent for a bit and just stopped in and noticed the Radiance discussion. I scanned down and saw your photo and said to myself "I could have sworn she got metal brackets!!" and I remembered your sending me some photos of them on you and that they looked GREAT! I went back and see that you switched to clear on top a week or two ago. Ahhh - I'm glad because it means I'm not losing my mind! LOL. Anyway - either way you looked great in them, but I'm so happy to see he changed them for you and you are more comfy in these, that is what is important!

Still nothing new with me - after I lost my job, I have to save my pennies.

I'm confused people.....are radiance self ligating or are there elastics involved? Maybe they are both! I'm easily confused.

BF - Radiance are not self-ligating. I have clear ligs on mine (and they're still clear, despite a couple of Diet Pepsi's and some ketchup!).

Melgreen - Hi girl! I'm really sorry to hear about your job situation, but you're right, you must take care of that before other things. Sorry to confuse you. I confuse myself, sometimes. Haha And I think I confuse many people around here... but that's what I'm here for: to keep everyone on their toes!

BWAHAHA Cathy....yes you're right, I wouldn't trade my rapidly approaching debanding date for your clear brackets (at this point). However I'm still jealous...at least you get to go through your treatment with those purdy clear brackets. They are so awesome!

@catgyrl. No idea what you're talking about . PS They look great!

@Brace Face. The first picture has the elastic ligs around the bracket to hold the wire in. The second picture is the bracket alone with no wire and therefore no ligs. It isn't self-ligating.

@Denise. These brackets look great, but there's obviously no comparison to a debonded tooth!

Dr. Tam - Thanks, I know Clarity do options for both so I wondered if Radiance did too.

Catgyrl - I would swap places with you just because you live in Hawaii.....that's good enough for me!
