Question Crowns and Wisdom teeth? Can it be done after braces?

Hello, I'm new to this forum! I was hoping that i could get some insight on perhaps, people who have been in this situation, or know a lot more than me about it!

I've been going to my ortho for about three years now for my braces treatment. He has done good work, but has been charging us a lot for his services. This past December, he told me that we could probably finish my braces treatment in January.

I went this month waiting to see what happens, until I realize its only xrays, a cleaning for the new year, and a tightening. Once we are done, he tells me that I would need crowns to lift up my bite more permanently (he used some i guess filling stuff or plaster-like stuff to raise my bite for the brackets on my bottom teeth)

Then, he tells me that he sees my wisdom teeth on the xrays. He said one looks like it will erupt, and he wants to remove all of them. He wants to remove all four, and put the crowns on before my braces come off, which he says would be about another three-four months.

Is it okay to reject these services until after my braces have been removed? To be honest, my mom is not too happy about this ortho because he does this all the time. Plus, I know that our insurance will not cover everything, and this economy has been so tough for my family.

My mom wants to go to another ortho. Is it okay to do wisdom teeth extraction after my braces are off? Is there a severe problem with waiting four months?

    I would appreciate any responses!

Wow ... sounds like you're been getting good treatment but now have some doubts. If you're really unsure, I recommend you consult with another ortho to hear what they recommend be done to complete your case. It will cost, but it would be worth it to give you peace of mind. I think your Mum has the right idea!

Wisdom teeth can ruin orthodontic work, unless they come through properly, in a mouth with sufficient space. The removing of wisdom teeth is not something an orthdontist usually does. Either a dentist or a dental surgeon needs to be consulted about removing these third molars. They may also be able to give you a recommendation of when the best time to have these removed is. Wisdom teeth can be removed after orthodontic work and sometimes quite some time after ... it just depends on how they're growing and what affect they'll have on your current arches.

Keep in mind that you will have retainers to keep your teeth aligned, although the pressure from wisdom teeth can still affect this retained alignment.

Good luck with getting the best outcome and please remember that retainer wear is for life. Firstly a period of full time wear, then nights only and finally two or three nights a week for life ... or for as long as you want your teeth to stay where they are when your braces come off. Teeth move for as long as you're alive ... so it's essential to never loose your retainers!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

I agree wholeheartedly with Sunny. Go to another orthodontist and/or dentist, and ask that person what they think. It's perfectly ok to go in and talk to them and get a second opinion. Just like with a normal doctor, you always want to get a second opinion before having something removed from your body! My dentist tried to take my wisdom teeth right before I got my braces and it's a good thing I didn't let him, because it turns out that I needed one of them for proper tooth alignment and ended up only having one removed. Best of luck!
