    "pre-formed" braces

Hi - has anyone had their braces glued on all in one shot? As in - they take molds of your arches. And then the ortho somehow has all of the braces fitted together and then they just glue them in - rather then placing each individiual bracket on to the teeth at a time.

I've heard of this before but haven't seen much discussion about it. If people have a hard time keeping their mouth open for an extended period of time - then this reduces the overall timeframe a bit.

Never heard of it. They put a thing in your mouth that keeps it open anyway, so you're not actually holding your mouth open, you're resting it on the mouth guard thing. The whole procedure only took my ortho about five, maybe ten, minutes to place the brackets and put the wire in.

Wow 5-10 mins for entire mouth? I've heard under and hour but never that fast.

For me the actual position of my jaw being open - even if I am resting it on the mouth stretcher - can be uncomfy for me. He showed me what they use and I tried it - but he just feels this will be even faster for me.

    Thks.

Yep it was super fast. They marked exactly where each bracket was going to go, then glued them on and bonded them, put in the wire, and bam...all done! Was very very fast. I've never had an ortho appointment that has lasted longer than 20 minutes. The very first appointment where they put them on took more time in their explaining the care to me than it did to get the actual braces.

I know what your talking About . My ortho uses something called ortho iq system, where from your impressions they can form a custom tray that has all the brackets in it. So that they just clean and put the cement on every tooth and put In the tray and light cure the brackets and then peel the tray off. It's much faster and much more comfortable .

In-Ovation offers this method but my ortho placed them on by hand. Basically they take a mold, send it to in-ovation then they send back a pre-fit layout

This technique is known as indirect bonding. Our office was one of the first offices in Canada to use OrthoCAD IQ but discontinued it after finding some quality control issues. I think the company was expanding too fast at that time. We have since developed a technique to do this lab procedure in the office. The process has several advantages. While 10 minutes would be fantastic, with the preparation and isolation of the teeth, fitting the trays, and curing the resin, the upper and lower teeth can probably be bonded within about a half hour.

Here's a blog entry about it from a couple of years ago. Hope it helps!

Thanks Dr. Tam - I'm reasonably sure my ortho makes them in the office as you describe as well and does not send them out to orthocad. He'll take molds of my teeth and I return in a week to have the braces placed on my teeth. He's doing this with Inocation-C self ligating brackets.

    Thks again!

    Yeah
While reading about bonding techniques this one came up, indirect vs direct bonding as Dr Tam mentions. Actually I ready it the first on a manufactures website when comparing bonding techiques. Some orthos like to work it out on the molds directly and transfer them as a whole like a strip. I think that there placement problems during transfer but with new QA/QC most orthos can compensate. So if that is what your ortho is accustomed to it should be the best solution for you. My daughter is getting her lowers put in tomorrow will let you all know how long it takes.

    Good Luck

My daughter had her brackets placed by indirect bonding a few years before me, where as mine were put on one tooth at a time. Interestingly, my time in the chair was shorter than her's and none of my brackets came off. She had to have a few brackets replaced due to them coming off during the hours and days following this first appointment.

Where I work, each ortho direct bonds the brackets and have decided with this method for now. We rarely have had a patient return due to brackets coming off in the hours/days following this appointment, plus the method used is fast and easy for the patient to cope with.
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
