    Question Disclosing Tablets

Will disclosing tablets stain Ligatures? Would really like to see how well I'm brushing but slightly nervous about staining. I have silver ligs if that helps?
    Thanks

I've heard conflicting things. Some people say yes, they do stain - in fact some people have had their orthodontists tell them specifically NOT to use them...and then others have said they've used them and it's not been a problem. Probably you should give your ortho a quick call and ask the folks at the desk what they recommend. They are the ones who will know the most about the type of ligs you have, and what their experience with the tabs has been in the past. Good luck!

We give our patients a box of disclosing tablets with the bag of goodies they get after they have their brackets bonded. We ask them to use them once weekly for the first two months, then twice a month for a few months ... and if they're happy with their oral hygiene, they can then use them monthly for the rest of their treatment. Sometimes if we're concerned about their oral hygiene at an appointment, we'll get them to chew one, so they can see why we're concerned and ask them to use them once a day for a week, until things improve, then to go back through this routine again.

We've found this has improved the overall oral hygiene of our patients and means we rarely have problems when the brackets are removed.

The disclosing tablets we use are bright red ... and they will stick only to plaque ... which is there job. So if you have plaque ... expect to see bright red, if you don't, you won't. If you have plaque, you need to brush more carefully in those areas, and this is also how you get red of the disclosing colour that has attached itself to the plaque.

For me ... my tongue always has some plaque on it ... and so I will always get some bright red on it. It doesn't take too long to go away though.

I've had both ceramic and metal brackets ... ligs of many colours, including clear, silver, purple and black. I use disclosing tablets at least once a month and I've never had any stainging anywhere other than my tongue. Brush properly first ... then chew, then see if there's any areas that need extra work, then do that extra ... although remember to be gentle.

    Good luck!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

Here in Australia you can buy them in pharmacies and also in some supermarkets.

Well they didn't stain my ligatures and I seem to be brushing well so far despite not having a toothpaste that leaves me with the same smooth clean feeling that my old sensodyne did before they 'improved' it The search continues for a decent toothpaste lol.
