I had to wait a week for retainers. My teeth did shift a bit in that time, but the retainers soon took care of that once I started wearing them.
Well, i got my braces off wed after having them on for 14 months.
They took molds, and said come back monday for your essex retainer.
I glady said ok, still happy about removing my braces. I Got home, started bragging about my new awesome teeth!
Got up Thursday, felt a little tugging on my teeth, ignored it cause they still looked great and then i went throughout the whole day bragging about my awesome teeth!
But at night when i went to brush them, it looked like my front left tooth (incisor) was pushing forward.....? (This was the tooth that had to be brought bad at the start of treatment). when i ran my finger or tongue on the teeth, i coulda swore that it wasn't in alignment with the others.
Again i brushed it off to my paranoia, and went to sleep.
Got up today.. looked in the mirror, and
The tooth has DEFINITELY pushed forward! It's clearly not aligned with the others, and its pretty obvious if you just look at it from the front!
I took a picture from the bottom to see if it did move, and it definitely has, a good couple millimeters probably. Then i looked around at the other teeth, and my bottom teeth have started opening a small gap between the front teeth.......
Now i know that teeth will move slightly in a week, but no way they are supposed to move this much in 2 DAYS!
Ok im pissed now..... Call the dentist. I want to talk to this guy...
What? He's not there?! Will be back monday!!!
ok, so what now?
My teeth have already moved a lot in only 2 days, and i have to wait 3 more days before seeing the orthodontist.... i'm just imagining how much my teeth will move by then, and then being told i have to wear braces again!
Am i ...effed? If they did move will they charge me to put them back where they were?!

I've also heard that teeth do shift during that week between braces and retainers. I've also heard that retainers can make your teeth ache like when you first got braces when you put them on after that week off as well. My orthodontist makes the retainers in the lab right there, so his people only have to wait a few days for them. I'm hoping this will minimize the discomfort again because I'd be super frustrated to get these things off, and then go through that miserable pain again!
My daughter waited a full two weeks for her retainers, and she did have a little relapse, but the retainers put everything back in order again.
I know it is frustrating, but unless things go really haywire - which is unlikely- you should be fine for another few days. With Invisalign, every time we take our trays out - especially during the first week or so of a new tray - the teeth shift back to the position they were in before the new tray. Within a week, though, they have settled into the new position to a good degree. I suspect it is the same with retainers.
Hang in there!
Hope you guys are right!
Thank You
-btw my appointment was changed till tuesday :/
4 days to go!
Good luck with your retainers A Munk3y!
Many ortho's do not have their own lab, as that's another specialist operation and this means a wait for removable retainers. The retainers are made to fit the moulds that are taken on your debonding day, which means, as other's have written, they'll move your teeth back into that alignment.
The biggest part is ahead ... a lifetime commitment to retainer wear! :thumb:
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
