    Getting a New Wire

Later today, I'm going to get a new wire for my braces. To be honest, I'm a little bit scared, since this is the first time I've done this since I got them. How bad is it compared to when you first get your braces put on? And does it hurt the same way?

    Thanks for the help. ^_^

You'll be sensitive for a few days but it will pass. It shouldn't take as long as did when you first got braces though.

Most people reacts differently ... because it depends on so many thinks, like how much this wire needs to move teeth and how those teeth are feeling and if they're already loose or need loosening etc.

Hopefully you'll adjust quickly and if you need soft foods for a meal or two, remember to keep trying to chew, as chewing really does help our teeth/gums to feel better.

    Good luck with your progress!

You will have the same kind of sensitivity you had at first, but not on the same level. You'll probably lose your ability to eat solids for a few days, but I would say by the third day you'll be back to normal (mostly anyway). Stay medicated those first few days with some Motrin IB (always take with food btw, hard on your liver). It's really no big deal, it will only take a few minutes to change the wire, and if you take some motrin before you go in, you won't have that much pain afterward. Good luck!

Thanks, everyone. I'm definitely pretty sore, but it's going away somewhat. I had some toast earlier today, but that's pretty much the hardest thing I can eat.

GeekyGirl - toast is always the first actual "food" I try to eat after adjustments; I make it really soggy with a lot of butter. I'm 5 days into my last adjustment, and there's no pain whatsoever now. So, this is what we can expect every 4-6 weeks for the next couple of years. Could be worse, right?

Oh it gets even easier actually!! My last few wire changes, the pain only lasted a single day. I was in absolute shock because I had prepared myself for the usual 3-4 days of pain and inability to eat solids. So it gets easier even before you get your braces off!

Oh, I sure hope so, Denise. Do your teeth become less sensitive, too, as you get closer to braces removal? I'm dreading having to get the bonding sanded off again with my teeth being so sensitive. It brought back all of my dental nightmares, and I kinda almost panicked for a minute because of the high-pitched sound of the machine; the smell of burning "something", and my tooth pain. Thank GOODNESS it was only the top row!

I agree that you will be sensitive for a few days. Give it some time and the soreness will go away. Hang in there, time is limited and before you know it you will be sporting that beautiful smile (without braces).

Just had my first wire changed and springs put on my bottom teeth to create more space. My bottom teeth are killing me now and its moved around alot already. My bite also feels completely out of whack with my top teeth now hitting the bottom in the space of a few hours and also a fair gap between two of my bottom teeth has emerged. I forgot how hard it was to eat!
