    Got braces put on today!!!

I got my braces put on this morning. It didn't hurt when they put them on, but now my mouth is starting to feel sore. Any advice on what I should do to get used to them??

Well, for the next few days/week life is pretty much probably going to not be good for your mouth. BUT, I very very highly recommend you stay medicated. Take 600mg (3 tablets) of Motrin IB (yes it has to be Motrin haha it's the best). Be sure to take it with food, every 4-5 hours. You won't believe the difference it will make for you. The brackets are going to start to cut holes in your cheeks. Keep wax on the brackets and it will help relieve that. Also, rinsing with salt water helps too. You may lose the ability to eat solid foods for a while. Your teeth will be very sensitive. So keep lots of soft food on hand. Soup, sugar free pudding, mashed potatoes, pasta, rice...things that don't require a lot of chewing. Truly though, the only thing that can make you used to them is time itself. You will learn how to eat again with them. Talking with them is different. Staying hydrated with lots of water throughout the day really helps with that. And remember that we have ALL gone through this period, no one is exempt. Some may have more or less pain than others, but generally the first few days are the same for everyone.

We are here for you, and good luck!

Great your treatment has started and here's to you adjusting quickly!

Wax is really important at this stage and it's about using wax generously to help your mouth toughen without sores. Please don't believe the 'old wives' tale that you're better to 'toughen' it out without wax so your mouth will toughen up. This isn't true and will result in your mouth being sore and you feeling yuck. The wax only needs to be removed when you brush and is great to help your mouth feel good while you're eating.

Good oral hygiene is essential at this stage, and although flossing will take a bit longer, it will get easier with practise ... so practise once a day! Brush with a small soft brush and be careful to brush gently. It's important to take care of the enamel on your teeth and your gums.

Rinsing with warm salt water a few times a day will soothe your mouth and for many people this is also healing.

Most important ... drink lots of water. This will keep your body well hydrated and that means your mouth will find these additions easier to cope with. Good hydration is important throughout your treatment and of course it's really good for your body for all your life.

    Good luck!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
