Teeth move on average 1 mm a month! This being an average means that sometimes it may be a little faster and other times a little slower.
Good luck with your extractions sites closing smoothly!![]()
Hi,
I had my self ligating braces for 4 months and i'm wondering how long does it take for the extraction gaps (1st premolars were extracted) to close? No powerchain, nothing... Will it close without powerchain?
How does it work? My ortho never bother to explain when i asked. Please help!
thanks.![]()

After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
Sunny's answer is probably more accurate than mine.
But I had four teeth extracted, and my gaps are just now closed up after 6 months of treatment. I've had power chains for the last 2ish months, and they definitely sped things along.
The speed of space closure and the way the spaces close will depend on the amount of crowding and the reason why teeth were removed.
If there was a lot of crowding, space closure will happen "faster" because there is really less space to close. As mentioned above, usually about 1mm a month can be expected.

Why were these teeth removed in the first place? Was that explained, and why the spaces need to be closed? Were you given any alternatives?
So shine_188 has no power chains on, and I've heard so much about this teeth moving about 1mm per month. And can somebody please explain clearly, will or will not the extraction gaps fill without powerchains or any similar thing on? Do they move by themselves?
My ortho is similar to yours shine, no bothering about explaining...
eNJay...
I am interested in this topic as well. I had 4 1st pre molars out last week, and thus have some huge gaps. 1 tooth on my upper right side will fill this gap (expected).
The Crime: Protruding upper canine, upper and lower crowding.
Sentence: 2 years
Fine: $4,100
First day with brackets: 12/05/2011. 4 Extractions: 12/12/11. 1st Adjustment: 01/04/12. 2nd Adjustment: 2/15/12 Pulling the canine down. 3rd Adjustment 3/28/12 (canine's in the wire, and pulled into position!). 4th adjustment: 5/16/2012 (closing the gaps!)
