The whole point of this is that the photos that are most accurate for determining the severity of a class 3 malocclusion are when your lower jaw is in a more retruded position. This was in the second group of photos you posted, not the first. Often times, the position of the teeth cause the lower jaw to be postured forward, making a class 3 underbite appear worse than it actually is and is often referred to as a "pseudo-class 3". The fact that your teeth could go edge to edge means that the class 3 is not as bad as it appeared in the original post. The best photo would be to look at a comparison of the classification from the side view and compare the pretreatment photos for when the back teeth touch and when they don't. You will see a clear difference in the severity of class 3.
This is not to take anything away from the way your teeth look now. As mentioned above, it's great to see such progress, so congratulations! However, it is important to distinguish between the two different ways one can bite down, as it has a severe impact on the diagnosis and treatment plan.
