    tooth extractions while in braces....

Sorry to post so many new threads, but I was also wondering if anyone on here had extractions after they were already in braces. My bonding appointment for bottom braces is 5/24/11, and I know I will need a tooth pulled on the bottom, but they are putting the braces on first. How does that work? Do they not put a bracket on it, and just kind of bypass it. In my case I can see they could do that, since that tooth is out by itself while the rest of my teeth are extremely crowded and kind of pushed back. Just wondering if anyone has went through something similar. I have never had a "healthy" tooth pulled, except my wisdom teeth. All 4 were cut out, and I was fast asleep while they did it, so as far as an extraction, I have no idea what to expect. So I guess I am just nervous about the extractions from every angle. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

The majority of our patients have their teeth removed after their braces go on. That tooth will be left without a bracket just before you have it removed. The wires can go right over the tooth, may be sectioned on either side, or left our completely. Many general dentists like the wires out, but specialists often have no issues removing the teeth with wires in place.

I just had two removed in the last 6 months. It's not something I would walk in and ask for, but it wasn't the worst medical experience I have had (and I hate blood and shots!). The part that was difficult was the numbing shot...you can't even really feel anything when they pull the tooth. My extraction sites did seep for several hours so be prepared for that. Good luck!

I'm going thru the same thing. I went for my first adjustment on tuesday. The doc had the brackets removed off the teeth she want extracted and only put the wire on five of the front top teeth. I went for a consult with the oral surgeon the next day. He will be putting me to sleep because along with the two teeth he has to removed he also has to get an impacted canine out of the roof of my mouth. I'm very nervous.

Ditto what everyone said here. My upper premolar was left unbracketed, and the wire went across all of my upper teeth, stopping just short of that tooth. The oral surgeon took one look and joked, "I guess this is the one I pull? Piece of cake!" Since I get nauseous with IV sedation, I opted to pay extra for nitrous oxide, but it was over so quickly, I don't feel I got my $75 worth. LOL! He told me I said, "Already? Not yet!!" Thank goodness I didn't say anything more crazy. Oh, and I was "nitrous-ed up" for the numbing shot, so I knew what they were doing... but didn't give a darn.

Anyway, I healed splendidly; no pain, swelling or bruising. You'll be fine.

I had 4 extractions a few days ago, 2 on the top 2 on the bottom. I already had my wisdom teeth taken out a few years ago. It didn't go bad, alot of pressure, but I also paid a extra $31.00 for the nitro to feel relaxed it just made me feel like I had a few drinks and I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. The worst was getting home and changing the gauze out it got stuck in my braces and of course it was all full of blood. It was a awful mess, but once the numbing part wore off I just took some advil and haven't been in to much pain. I would do advil & tynenol switching back in forth if you feel pain, that's what they told me and it's worked. I just wished the gaps would close up kinda soon but from what I have read it takes awhile. The end result will be the best part of all this pain though, that's what I keep telling myself!!

I was wondering the same thing. I know you're already done with this, but I just got brackets on Wednesday. After losing a bracket, and complaining about the pain, they put the wires on. I was starting to wonder if this was normal. I have an appointment to have 4 of my pre molars removed in a week. It feels like my teeth are ready to break with no place to move without the gaps.

The Crime: Protruding upper canine, upper and lower crowding.
    Sentence: 2 years
    Fine: $4,100
First day with brackets: 12/05/2011. 4 Extractions: 12/12/11. 1st Adjustment: 01/04/12. 2nd Adjustment: 2/15/12 Pulling the canine down. 3rd Adjustment 3/28/12 (canine's in the wire, and pulled into position!). 4th adjustment: 5/16/2012 (closing the gaps!)

Well, everyone's experience is different, but they did not put a bracket on the tooth to be pulled. I had it pulled, and went back a week later and they put the wire in. It's been almost 6 months and you can't even tell where the tooth was pulled and my bottom teeth have lined up so nicely. I love it!!

In my opinion I think the more crowding or alignment issues you have the quicker you see improvements. I had my braces put on the bottom first, and I saw results fairly quickly. Like 3 or 4 weeks in. Now, I have braces on my top arch, and there was only a little crowding, but not bad, and I don't feel like I am seeing results as quickly as I did with the bottom arch. I just keep reminding myself that this whole process is going to take time. 24-30 months to be exact. Yuck! LOL!
