I had my braces removed on August 5th and had permanent retainers placed the same day. 3 days later, I picked up my Hawley? the clear ones? retainers. OMG...they were a pain to put in and to take out. I remembered I called the office crying in sever pain! I had impacted teeth removed from my 2 front teeth and I swear the pain from have my bone broken to take them out was a piece of cake compared to the retainer pain. I went back 3 days later to complain about them being extremely tight and hard to put in. They were putting soooooo much pressure on my left front tooth. The orthodontist said she "losened" them a bit which I could feel a little better, but the pressure was still there. That weekend from Aug 12-14, I couldnt drink water with the retainers and when I took them out, the pain was less but still bad. On the 15th, I had an appt with my dentist to discuss crowns and I brought up the severity of the pain and the hygienist said these retainers are placing too much pressure on the tooth. I called the office and the lady at the front desk said..im not suppose to be drinking with the retainers and she made me mad, cuz I said, so each time I take a sip of water, Im suppose to remove the retainers??? She went and spoke to a tech who said the pain is normal and I should brush with sensodyne and rinse with a flouride rinse. Which I did...now this whole week was a pain for me...the sensitivity got extremely worse! I cant eat warm/hot food...i can't smile if wind is blowing, i cant drink water. The pain is sooooooooooooo intense! I stopped wearing the retainers 2 days now...and the pain is still the same. I went back to the orthodontist yesterday 8/25 and he cut a window in the back of the retainer over the left upper tooth. I put the retainer in and wore it home and I can still feel the pressure. Note that, X-rays show no cavity, nothing is wrong with my root or the gum or the tooth itself. I am just having severe pain with the retainer. What should I do? I havent put it back in since yesterday afternoon. I do not know what to do...sometimes the pain just comes even if I have nothing in my mouth...HELP!
