    Braces causing shallow roots?

My friend just called and said that she had shallow roots on her front teeth. She had been told that when she had braces as a teen caused this because they moved the teeth too quickly. I've never heard of such a thing . . has anyone else?

Sounds scary! I hear that if they tighten the braces too much something happens to the roots. YIKES! O_O

It is possible, although very rare.

The main reasons for root reabsorption (when connected to orthodontic work) is when patients don't wear elastics properly and teeth move back and forwards frequently. Also when patients don't follow instructions and double up with elastics, causing more pressure on teeth than is needed.

Insensible many people find their teeth move quickly at times and slowly at other times, during orthodontic treatment but this does not result in reabsorption. Reabsorption can be caused by many things, and is rarely due to having had orthodontic treatment.

Mariah orthodontist's today do not 'tighten' braces, and therefore can not 'tighten' them too much. In the olden days, when archwires were not able to control how teeth moved, the orthodontists used to wind the ends of the archwires for people with a class II bite, and this was known as 'tightening'. This practise has not been around for many decades, because of the archwires that now exist.
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
