    Brackets and Annual Dental Cleaning

So, I wasn't advised to get a good annual dental cleaning before getting my braces on. I am regretting not thinking of that, and just doing it. Is that normal for orthodontists not to recommend that?

I have had the brackets on for almost 2 months, and I am going for my 6 month annual cleaning and check up today. I am worried they will not be able to clean the outside of my teeth for 2 years!

What is everyone's experience with this? Did you get a good cleaning before getting the brackets on? If not, did you get the brackets removed at any point to get a good cleaning? Are they able to still clean my teeth around the brackets?

The Crime: Protruding upper canine, upper and lower crowding.
    Sentence: 2 years
    Fine: $4,100
First day with brackets: 12/05/2011. 4 Extractions: 12/12/11. 1st Adjustment: 01/04/12. 2nd Adjustment: 2/15/12 Pulling the canine down. 3rd Adjustment 3/28/12 (canine's in the wire, and pulled into position!). 4th adjustment: 5/16/2012 (closing the gaps!)

    yes i did...

During my consultation, my treatment coordinator actually called my dentist office and set up to have a cleaning a few days before my braces were put on. She was very helpful, let the dentist office know that I would be getting braces, etc...so, I guess I am fortunate that not only was it suggested, it was initiated by my ortho.

Lucky. I would feel more confident in my ortho if they would have said something about this either way.

Yes I got a good cleaning a couple of weeks before getting my braces put on. It was my choice, my Orthodontist never mentioned this would be needed... I simply felt better knowing they would be cleaned thoroughly prior to the braces being fitted.

You can still have cleanings with the braces on, if you are that worried you could ask if your Ortho would be willing to remove your wires the same day you have an appointment for a cleaning so then they only have to clean around the brackets and not the wires too. The brackets are tightly bonded to the teeth, so no 'bad stuff' is going to get under the bracket so a clean around the brackets should be fine.

My ortho actually made me schedule a dental cleaning with my dentist the day of my next adjustment. I'm bad, I haven't gone for a cleaning in a couple years (yikes!). So the day of my adjustment I have to go to my ortho to get my wires removed, go to my dentist for my checkup and cleaning, then BACK to my ortho to get my wires put back in and power chain changed. LONG DAY.

I am going to make it a habit to get my teeth cleaned every 6 months.
