    Is this a good idea...

I had braces applied on Jan 18 - they are self-ligating (similar to Damon but are made by another company). The upper arch wire was placed that day but the lower wire was not put in yet. I am having my left lower central incisor extracted tomorrow and I have an appointment an hour later to have my wire put in.
I don't know if it is a good idea or if I should wait a few days. The orthodontist's office said it is up to me... but most people choose to wait. What do you think?
My line of thinking is - if it is going to be sore and hurt for a few days - get all of the soreness over at the same time .... In addition - the gap is going to be right in the front of my mouth and I am hoping that somehow having that wire in there will help to distract from the gap. I am a nurse and I have to work early on tuesday morning and face patients all day long

PS - I might add that I am 53 yrs old and a little bit freaked out about having a permanent tooth pulled - esp. a lower incisior!

I started Invisalign a few months after getting a tooth pulled - so can't give advice on starting braces right away, but here's a little of my experience of having tooth pulled.
After getting my tooth pulled (upper left pre-molar), there was bleeding/oozing for about a day along with throbbing pain that evening. In my opinion having nothing in the way of changing gauze, putting teabag in there to slow bleeding, etc. would be a great help. Of course, everybody is different, but I'm not sure I'd want to have brace wires put on a short time later.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

I had 6 teeth out in November. Two were wisdon teeth and the other 4 were all my pre-molars. I feel the same way as you do about it going to hurt anyway so why not. I didn't really have any bleeding or have to change quaze for the 4 pre-molars so i would say go for it. I had to wait a week becase one of the wisdom teeth they pulled was impacted (talk about OUCH!!!) but if it had been just my 4 pre-molars I would have gone in that same day if i had the option.

Only you know how much pain you can handle. Good Luck

    Good point!

But, if you can I would say go for it. I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed while in braces and it was a breeze. If I ever needed to do it again I would as there was no problems.
